Hi All,
Im a new Z4 owner (although not new to BMW) and i have just bought a 2003 3.0 in sterling grey. I bought the car just before christmas so im still in that honeymoon period, and hence wanted to put my own stamp on the car by changing a couple of things.
Ive just got off the phone to my local main dealer to get some prices on parts. I will list these with prices below for your entertainment;-

Headlights with white direction indicators £323 + VAT each
Rear lights with white direction indicators kit £345 + VAT
illuminated door entry strips £143 + VAT
Piano Black interior trim kit £761 + VAT
Mobility Kit £72 + VAT
Convertible top cover, side £78 + VAT
M Sport steering wheel £350 + VAT

Total cost £2,395 + VAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On top of this i mentioned i wanted to get my remote reprogrammed so that it would operate the soft top.......£132!!!!!!!

I had black high-gloss trim on my 2006 325i coupe, (similar to piano black trim) and it really does attract and show dust like crazy. :x :)

You will get the lights online or off EBay for a fraction of that...probably a few other bits too

Piano Black interior trim kit £761 + VAT

Makes my £180 genuine carbon Leather really cheap :D

Must ask - what is genuine 'carbon leather', sounds good but is it carbon or leather....?

It's a new car. Wait a month and the mad urge to spend more money will slowly subside. Then you can focus on the bits you really need...(like tyres if you are on RFTs). Have fun!

It's carbon-weave effect leather - I think it looks quite good (I'm finding the piano black in mine a bit shiny, easy to mark, and a dust-magnet).

It's leather, with a weave like carbon (but not)...best interior option IMO. Actual CF would look a bit weird I think

I was looking for the Piano Black trim myself as I dint like the brushed Aluminium, but the Carbon Leather came up on ebay, and I must admit I think it is much better than the Piano Black, as it doenst show every mark, and doesnt reflect the sun like the brushed aluminium and Piano does when the roof is own and the sun is behind you.

It's also only an option on the ///M so like hens teeth to find secondhand. When I trade my car for a ///M I may have to remove if the ///M doesnt have it, a buuger of a job but wouldnt want to go back to either of the other two options now.

The standard was brushed aluminium with the no cost options Carbon Leather or cost option of Madeira Wood.

Piano Black was an option if you went the 'individual' route.

Are you sure Carbon Leather was available on the non M? I know it was standard on the M and Piano / Wood were options....

The Alu trim does not look right to me, in part it's what put me off the 3.0

No, I was agreeing with the comment that is was only available as a no cost option on the ///M.

when i bought mine there was a z4 coupe that had machined aluminium trim, it looked cool.

im a real fan of the carbon leather, im contemplating wrapping my dash bits in real carbon fibre.

When I bought mine you coud spec Piano Black for about £350, didnt have to go down the individual route.

Peehaps it's the quantity of upgrades you want all at once that creates such a high price (obvious I know). Try the same type of upgrades with Mercedes, Audi, VW et al and there won't be much difference. Oh and why not try to 'deal' and get the reprogramme thrown in if you go for the full upgrade list. And finaly if not a member of the BMW club join, most dealers will give you 10% discount on spares/accessories on production of your membership card - saving £239.50p or if yours won't shop around.

I've got the illuminated door entry strips - don't make me go any faster, don't save petrol, don't make the exhaust sound any different, handling is the same - a bit like a 'stubby' but not half as much fun in the dark!

I do realise that not everything on that list is that bad. But some items are obscene. The piano black trim works out to around £900 once you have included VAT. £900!!!! For a few bits of trim!!!! That is just greedy!!! If i want clear indicators im looking at well over £1000! Its not even as if ive got xenon headlamps. And anyone using the "well if you cant afford a premium car, you shouldnt buy one" argument is full of it. None of the bmws ive owned before this have been quite so ridiculous, neither was the Jaguar XK, XJ, or the Lexus LS. And £132 per hour for some spotty, slightly retarded, schoolboy apprentice to work on my car badly. Its a joke. It would be cheaper for me to hire my dentist to fix my car!
I think what makes it worse is that im struggling to find other ways of purchasing parts. There just doesnt seem to be much on ebay or independent parts suppliers. I guess i was spoilt by my E39 whose parts were so common i could buy them in Tesco.

The other thing i find strange is the lack of old fashioned, honest, enthusiast specialists in my area. I thought i would be tripping over them when it comes to service time but it doesnt seem to be the case. When i owned the jags, the lexus's (lexi?), even a saab i found some really great local people to work on them that wouldnt rip you off. Anyway ive had enough of complaining for a while so rant over......... :D
