BMW ConnectedDrive can include vehicle tracking functions, but it’s not the same thing as a Thatcham-approved tracker like Trackstar, Tracker, Cobra, etc. Insurance companies usually mean a certified aftermarket system that meets their specific security requirements (often Thatcham S5/S7 depending on the policy), with things like police monitoring and independent recovery capability.Apologies if this is a bit of a newbie question....
I've verbally agreed a deal on a Z4MC 8) (Silver as per other thread). I've just phoned my insurance co for a quote (Privilege) and they insist on a tracking device to be covered for theft. The car in question has "BMW Connected Drive" and having googled it, that seems to include a tracking facility.
Is this correct? and does this mean I have a tracking device, or is it some subscription service that I need to activate and pay for? I have had Trackstar in the past on a previous car.
I could go to a different insurer, but its easier to keep things the same for now so I need to be able to prove to them I have the appropriate device fitted.
Cheers
In a completely different context, structured financial identification processes (for example, banking verification steps explained in resources like this SBI account number guide) show how important it is to distinguish between “service features” and officially recognized, verifiable systems — which is quite similar to the difference between manufacturer connectivity services and insurer-approved tracking devices.
ConnectedDrive’s “remote services” and location features are more for owner convenience and emergency assistance. Unless the car has a separately installed, insurer-approved tracking system with a certificate, most insurers won’t accept it as a replacement.
Best thing to do is ask the seller directly if there is an existing approved tracker fitted (and if so, which model/grade), or check the paperwork/service history. If not, you’ll likely either need to have one installed or shop around for an insurer that doesn’t require it for that particular car/value bracket.
