BMW Comprehensive or Named Component Warranty

Hi all,

I have a 2006 3.0si Coupe currently on 49k miles and I am trying to garner opinion as to whether or not it is worthwhile taking out a comprehensive or named component BMW warranty.

My concern is that the car is now approaching 9 years old and shortly coming up to 50k miles - things are likely to start going wrong. For instance my starter motor has begun to grumble on the first start of the day etc.

What is the general consensus on a BMW warranty? Is it worthwhile to get? Named component would be £397 for the year not including the Emergency Service, and comprehensive would be £460.

Thanks guys!
Loving the Zed! Coming up to one month of ownership :)

I think its a good warranty. Take it to the dealer and they fix it for you. However, when I looked into it and had a AUC warranty, if the problem wasn't covered under warranty, you had to pay the investigation costs (High dealer rate). If it wasn't covered, you are already a few hundred quid in just to get it diagnosed. Then you have the dealer costs to get it sorted.

Obviosuly the issue maybe sorted under warranty, so no costs to you.

The reason I went against it was its expensive for an M car, and I decided if I had an issue, I would get it sorted at my trusted Indy. When you look at the cost of things vs the cost BMW quote, they are not as bad.

People will bang on about good will etc, but I think you would have to be very lucky in your case with a 9yr old car and 50k miles.

Personally if I were you, I would not bother with a warranty, bank the premiums and find a good indy to do any work for you.

Thanks for your thoughts CornishRob. A part of me agrees to an extent; tuck some money away and find a reputable local independent to do any work if any thing was to go wrong.

I am only looking for opinion as I know that my starter motor needs replacing; outright it will cost me £312 inc. VAT for parts and labour at a local indy with a good name. Compare that to the £460 warranty and the fact something else could go wrong, I thought it would be wise to explore my options.

Yes, if you know you need a new starter, and it will definitely be covered, then the extra for a year seems sensible I guess.

The warranty will cost you £560 if you claim for the starter so your adding another £238 to the cost.

£460 p/a? Lucky sod. Similar miles on my Z4MR is over a grand per year...

Yes, factoring in the £100 excess, it is quite over in terms of spend. But it does mean I have similar cover for another year, if something else was to go wrong. Really not sure what to do lol.

Haha, that's just the quote I am getting on www.bmw-warranty.co.uk - pretty lucky indeed!

I have named component warranty with them. I think its about 36 a month. Granted I could put the money aside instead and pay a decent indy to do so. But if the worst case happened and my engine or gearbox failed due to a faulty part then I hope they could repair the problem under warranty.
