bmw bbs 5 spoke split rims

These were genuine AC's I'd bet on that.
Wheels are such a difficult choice and personal for cars. I'd certainly need to see them on a car before deciding but don't worry, no changes in the pipeline for me, yet.

Sorry to resurect an old thread (I have not been able to post for some time) but should you Laquer the exposed cleaned alloy because it will corrode faster with no protection?

I'm looking to get mine refurbished, I will have the whole wheel striped, split and repainted with the lip painted like many of the refurbished ones i've seen on the BMW Approved used forecourts ;) hmmm something they are not telling us?

Yes, the 108s look nice but they are cr*p at keeping their finish.

I had all 4 alloys changed when car was in warranty!

Lepsons in Kent have given me a reply on how much it would be to refurb the 108's...

I am sure we can make these wheels look good again, to refurb them correctly we will need to split them this will take time so we will need the wheels for approx 1 week.

You can leave the car with us if you wish you will need to phone 01634 580582 to book your car in the cost for this service is £420 + VAT for all four wheels.

You can bring the wheels to us off the car at any time it will cost £380 + vat for all four.

We suggest that you have the rim painted in a chrome silver paint rather than polished we will give you a years guarantee on the painted finish.

Not too cheap then.

I intend to refurbish mine in a few months time and I wondered if it's possible to leave the tyre on the rim and just remove the centre, it certainly looks that way.

Also, I think it's a good idea to use chrome silver paint on the rim, it might last a bit longer.

Anyone?

Wow - that's expensive.
My local guy is offering to refurb and powder coat 4 rims from £100 so I reckon I can get him to do the stars if i decide to change colour and I can polish the lips myself.

A week to do it because of splitting them...lol. I reckon I split my rim down in under 10 minutes. Used a 800w power drill on low gearing and low speed driving a 12 point bit. Once I mastered the torx revolving and not me it just wound them all bar 2 or 3 out. A touch with the socket set and they came out too.

Interesting that he favours chrome silver paint. Anyone any experience of this on rims???

I have a spare set of the 108s which are away being refurbished.

They have been split

Crubing marks mashined out

Been shot blasted

Chemical dip

Powder coated (bright silver) very close to the factory finish

Gloss lacquer

I have opted for the entire wheel to be powder coated including the polished rim to give a more durable finish. Once done i will swap the refurbished ones with the 108s on my car and have the second set done. These will be sold on. I have a set of dealer boxes to send them in and am based in Southampton UK. I will post some pictures of the refurbished set when they come back next week. Offers considered before they go on ebay.

I have part refurbished one of my spare set of rims and will eventually post pictures. I doubt I'll sell them though as they are too easy to keep to hand as spares.

Interestingly I contacted a sepcialist supplier of materials to polish alloy rims and have now got my own kit. They recommend that alloys never have the lips lacquered as they will always without exception fail and break down in months leading to aggressive corossion under the lacquer. Quality polish is their suggestion so that's what I'll be going with.

Can I do this referb without taking off the wheel, i.e do I have to remove the wheel to then split it as it looks that way but wanna make sure.

Pable your machine! i was gonna get charged 70 quid per wheel to get them polished but now doing this myself

The only reason to split the rim is to get the best finish. You can "repair" curb rash while the wheel is on the car, in fact I dare say you could polish most of the lip if you had the patience. However, it would be difficult, if not impossible, to do the areas where the inner section overlaps the outer rim. Obviously, any intended painting of the inner or outer would require good masking of the not to be painted area and it would be much more tricky to get a good finish than if the wheel where split.

I have, as a stop gap, sanded and polished our the curb rash and left the rest of the rim diamond cut. Admittedly this leaves a two tone finish but the polished areas are so small you cant tell unless your close up and, in any case, looks a lot better than the nasty damage. I fully intend to do the full wheel and have bought a practice to split (which I cant get the last few bolts out - any tips would be great!). To do the full lot I would be splitting the rim.

As a minimum I would take the wheel off the car, its easy to work with, horizontal rather that vertical for example, and it would be easy to mask and/or clean for any painting.

I havent lacquered my now repaired and polished lip, but so far they have stayed looking good, although only for two month so far.

I have my 4 108's sat in the hallway tyreless ready to go and get refurbed was quoted £250 by the wheel specialist in leeds if i split them and they just do the polishing/stripping etc I am starting to think maybe i will do myself after reading your excellent write up however a few questions:

1. The people who havent done the lip with laquer are they still like that now and is applying wax and perhaps spraying WD40 good enough if done monthly or has everyone gone back to laquer?
2. Anyone have a link to the exact bit i need for the torque wrench and where to buy in UK?
3. Are the stars interchangable? I actually have 6 of these alloys 1 has a cracked rim from mounting a curb (inner edge) could I use the unmarked star or are they balanced star and rim as a pair?
4. Would sealing the star to the rim with bead of silicone stop water getting in behind the rim.

It sounds very satisfying and i guess will need re doing in a few years... i have been wanting these refurbed for about a year now but never got round to it! i also have star spoke 71 which are very similar in that they have a split rim polished lip. Those have been painted so I could refurb those too and use as my winter wheels.

Thanks in advance!

Oh one last question - if the inner stars are unmarked but looking a bit dull what would bring them back to life like new?

I cant answer all but here's my bits:

1) I have only sanded down and polished sections of my rims so part is diamond cut and lacquered and part are mirror shine. The mirror shine has been done for over a month now and has been coated with poorboys wheel wax once and no laquer. I wash the car approx bi-weekly. No signs of corrosion on the bits I've polished.
2) This was more difficult to track down. Given the different descriptions of the part I eventually opted for http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000QB2XDK/ref=oss_product as a set to use. The necessary part is in there and, while I found it a good fit, the bolts will not budge on a wheel I acquired that is about five years old and doesnt appear to have been split previously. I am now drilling the buggers out! Not sure if the problems are because the wheel is old or whether the bolt heads are just an awful design. There are plenty of other head shapes that would be so much better but BBS have opted for something pants imo.
3) dont know
4) Not yet got this far but posts on here suggest yes but I do not know how you can seal the front. Surely there would still be a gap between the star and outer, although much reduced from stock, that could hold water and lead to corrosion.

Hope of some help
