BMW Approved Used Cars

Say, for instance you were thinking of buying or pxing with a franchised BMW dealer, what sort of deal should you be trying to go for vs what you'd probably get offered as standard?

I'm thinking warranty (vs extended warranty?), ability to haggle etc.

Anybody had experience in this area?

I got 5.5% off the forecourt price when I bought mine. Wasnt trading in as sold my old car to friend.

I got 350 off a 18k car, extra 500 trade in on my old car, 600 worth of servicing and mots. So improved the deal in my favour by about 1500. Car was cheapest auc of its kind already so all in a good deal I thought , other auc dealers had similar cars up at 20k.

A few months back BMW were offering a 2 year warranty instead of 1 year, but the dealers were picking up the tab. I got mine just too late, think it ended in July. Not likely to be repeated for a while, who knows (could be famous last words!)

:idunno:

Suppose it all comes down to cost to change.

They wouldn't budge on the price of mine, they said that it was because of the vehicle and it's age/mileage and number of owners, had it been something like a 1 series, where they know they can get another in quickly they would be able to negotiate on the price.

They gave me more for my PX than Sytner Canary Wharf, threw in some mats, 6 months Road Tax, next MOT free and half tank of petrol and that was it. Wish I could have negotiated more but think the salesperson knew I was going to buy no matter what, best way is to be prepared to walk away and hope that they will try and entice you back with a better deal...also timing it important, I went to look for mine in Jan, probably don't sell many during the winter months so prices may be cheaper than say, spring/summer when people are starting to look and dealers can hike up the prices.

Probably good to get some quotes for your PX, I used www.webuyanycar.com and also got Sytner to give me a quote too before going to my final dealer so at least you know what kinda deal you are getting...

Thanks all. Very interesting to see that the type of deals you could potentially get are pretty sporadic, depending on who/where you go. Just thinking about it at the moment, but I've seen a coupe I like the look of. Would rather wait and sell privately but thought it worth asking the question just in case. The standard 1 year warranty must be worthwhile, so I guess it's a case of trying to build the extras they throw in from there.

It depends on the dealer, the car, how long they've had it and how close to this months sales target they are so it's a tough one to answer definitively I'm afraid. In my experience trade in offers are always exceptionally low, usually lower than you ever think they could be...they will come up a bit but will drag it right out and as before, it depends.

As an example, I was offered £17,000 by the dealer for my 04 M3 against the Z4M (advertised at £35,000, this was 2007). I ended up selling it privately A week later for £24,000....and got £3k knocked off the Z4M. Another dealer wouldn't give me more than £600 off their identical Z4M, and that one was priced even higher than the one I bought.

How long is a piece of string, basically....

On a side note, webuyanycar.com should be your absolute worst case baseline, their values are also extremely low (for obvious reasons....they buy any car)

this is the key - I saw the one I wanted in the morning, they wouldn't budge much on price £250 or something, I said I was going to go and look at a cheaper one (which was true) - I phoned the dealer of the one i wanted later that day about 30 mins before they were going to close and said was about to buy the cheaper one unless they made me an offer which would stop me - they said £1000 off - deal done

 great advice. And, as I'm seriously in no hurry whatsoever am happy to get the right deal at the right time. If it doesn't happen then it doesn't happen.

My roadster in pretty much tip top perfect condition at the moment with all niggles sorted. Maybe I'll just enjoy her for some of the summer at least before heading to the small ads/AUC direction. Good to know where I could stand with it all though so cheers. Once again the forum members are like driving Jedi masters :D

inkey, I tried 3 dealer back in the summer on 3 ///MR's the PX value on mine varied from £12k to £14.5k, and all cars were around the same purchase price.

Shop around but it's worth getting an AUC car or at least one with BMW warranty so there are no nasty surprises in the first year.

Think it's all be said but shop around and politely walk away when the deal is cr*p, then wait for the phone call....
