Hey guys, yesterday I pulled off all the 108's ready for a refurb like cj and others have done
To keep the Z on the road I have put some star spoke 71 on there from my old compact which I gave to my mother... she hated the bumpy ride so put the steel wheels back on so I have had these 71's in storage for 5-6 years.
I think they look quite comical on there compared to the 108's however if you look in the BMW z4 accesory catalogue the17" 71's are actually one of the approved alloys for the Z4! They ride on 225/45/17 I had a set of pirelli P6000 225/45/17 however a few years back I had them on on a 325TDS and one of the rear blew out while pulling a trailor. I pulled into a garage and had them replace it on the cheap with any old tyre while away from home... turns out it was a Wanli s-108 , OH MY GOD! this tyre on the rear of the z4 has to be witnessed to be believed, it is the worst tyre in the world... it should be banned!! It will spin from 3rd to 4th in the wet, when pulling away in 1st in the dry with no clutch dump just normal hard acceleration it litrally screams out! Its the biggest piece of crap of a tyre ever... you certainly get what you pay for... for anyone who has always doubted one brand to another and the differences need to drive on a set of these I can only imagine what 4 would be like and I have just the 1 on! I will be changing it next week for a P6000 to be safe.
Immediate impressions when going from the 18" 108's to these 17" 71's is the soft bouncy feeling while driving along, the car also does not feel as quick??? strange... The ride quality though is a hell of a lot better no creaks in the cabin and no crashy feeling when going over bumps, very nice for those long journeys...
Now for the hard work on the 108's.... wish me luck
