BMW Adaptive LED headlights

Just wanted to say how impressed I am with these lights, we spec'd them on the new X3 and the way they work is amazing - another expensive option that will be one of the first things I tick for future purchases

They really do work as shown in the videos below

That is impressive, particularly in the 2nd video. I think the fog, whilst hoghlighting the beams, over dramatises it.

Agree with PerryGunn!

I specced the system with high beam assist on Mrs K's 335 and was very disappointed when I couldn't get the high beam assist on the 35is last September .

The other nice thing is that, on the Fxx-series cars, with a little bit of coding, you don't have to turn on the High Beam Assist - as long as the light switch is in the auto position, you can make it activate automatically when the lights turn on...

We have high beam assist on the X6 and the way it works is pretty cool.
Its not as fancy or complicated as those lights but works almost in the same way.
The first time I used it my hand was hovering over the switch ready to switch the high beam off in case it didnt do it itself.

Now that's very intersting!
I can't see any reason why anybody would want to turn it off?

Wish my adaptive LEDs on my oner done this :x

BMW seem to be behind Mercedes though

Now that's properly clever

How much was the option ?

I can't remember off hand - I'll look at the invoice tomorrow.
You know what it's like when you start to spec a new car tho, it's like a shark in a feeding frenzy !

It probably varies between models but, on the X3, the full-fat adaptive LEDs are a £1600 (before discounts) option - about £500 more than the equivalent 'Lighting Package' with Xenons

The LED package also plays some clever tricks with brightness levels - it measures street light intensity and will reduce brightness in a well lit area. Apparently it also increases the throw of the low beam as speeds increase although I can't say that I've actually noticed this...

I have a similar system on the Porsche, and was always skeptical about it beforehand but driving in the dark through bendy roads and mountain places it makes so much difference as you can actually see where you are going when you start turning the wheel as well.

Fortunately it was standard on my model as I don't think I would have specced it looking at the cost as an option.

I have a problem with adding stuff to cars after we've placed the order... I'll be seeking counselling... :crazydude:

When ordering, I try to keep the cost down to something 'reasonable' but find that, up until the build is locked down for production, I keep looking at the options and thinking 'Hmmm, I could add <insert option here>..., it's only an extra £xxx' - that's how the Lighting Package turned into the Adaptive LEDs...

What couldn't you get it? My 35is has adaptive and high beam assist?

seems logical as a system, i mean.. it's some motors and basic logic, surprised this isn't commonplace everywhere now really.

at 0:42 - isn't that the third car flashing the BMW driver to say 'im being blinded' right before it dims them? i don't think main beam should be on with a car infront of you at all (ie .. the time before it decides to create a tunnel is too long.. when light detected, tunnel should be instant).

Yep have this on my Merc and it's fantastic. Matrix led headlights that cut multiple holes in incoming traffic etc very cool. Fullbeam permanently on but only illuminating non traffic objects.

Did you manage to get a premium when selling the X3 for my signature on the bonnet?

It's got adaptive headlights but not high beam assist - the car was ordered mid August 2016 and was in the BMW system - it had all the essentials and most of the desireables but not high beam assist .
