BMW 840d and Polestar 2

Had this for a 48 hour test drive, BMW 840d. Beautiful looking Coupé with graceful lines, but a new diesel car when other manufacturers are vowing to stop production of diesel engined cars?
The car is extremely comfortable and is designed as a Grand Tourismo to cover many miles. I loved the way it drove and was very surprised at the acceleration of the 3 litre unit. It is four wheel drive with a little rear wheel steering when required. It has a market, but not for me. The 850i though is a different beast. Looks exactly the same but has my favourite engine, the 4.4 litre, twin turbo V8.

Seen a few of these now and think it’s a beautiful looking car in the flesh. Can you see yourself buying the 850?

No. My wife doesn't like it and she will be with me on long journeys. She prefers an Alpina B5 (that 4.4 litre V8 again). I also like the B5 and so far I am leaning towards it, but on the opposite side of engine power I actually like the new Polestar 2 100% electric car and have put a deposit on one.

I work on a diesel engine production line and they will not be stopping production of diesels anytime soon. The government (aswell as VW) messed up big time, causing a knock on effect to the consumer, damaging anything and everything diesel.

The newest generation of diesel engines are ridiculously clean and also perform incredibly well

That 8 series looks nice, but also huge! The side profile is similar to the new mustang

Thanks Ben. Porsche are going to stop production of diesels soon, Panamera, Macan and Cayenne affected, but it is nice to know that others will continue.

The Polestar looks interesting  I’d be putting my money into a V8 while we still can. Won’t be long till our only choice is electric.

I sat in the 840 while waiting for my 5 to be diagnosed with EGR, I was very impressed lovely looking motor, the discs are bloody huge

Discs are big and the feel at the pedal is terrific. Curling your toes is enough to get good braking. It sits low to the ground and does have a sports car feel. Getting out is an art and I tend to roll out of sports cars these days, then have a look around to see if anyone is looking.

I think they look great too, even though they are chuffing huge. Nice colour as well.

Would have to be a Polestar 1 for me. 8)
