BMW 330i Coupe (E92) owner looking to buy Z4 35i (E89)... tomorrow!!

Hi,

I'm Omar, I love my BMW coupe, but have always had my eye on the Z4, it looks beautiful!
I compared the SLK to the Z4... made me want the Z4 even more.

This is my car...

It's a 330i with all the extras like iDrive. At first I was worried about buying a 3ltr but I have to say it's bl**dy economic!

So I wanted to get the Z4 30i as I am used to the power, then I thought may as well go the whole way to 35i, never had a turbo before.

I've come to the forum seeking knowledge and help, is there anything I should know about E89's and 35i engine?

I would normally do my homework first but I think I have already found the car with all the extras I want, so I have no time, any user reading this post, if you could list your top 3 must know things, that would be great!

I hope to be an active member of this forum, and join any meets if any are going on. Thanks! :D

Hi Omar welcome to the forum
Take a look at this thread for any problems to check for - http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45&t=32132
But don't worry to much as I've had 2 E89's and no problems :)

Welcome to the forum, Omar!

I've gotta say, great choice on deciding to for the 35i. My brother got a 30i when I got my 35i and the difference in noise and push from the twin-turbo is well worth the jump!

As for things to look out for, when I was looking for mine the top concerns were:
1) High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure. This isn't too common but can be expensive if it happens. Switch the engine on when there's less than a 1/3 a tank of fuel and listen for a whirring/whilsting sound for an earlier indicator. The failure itself feels like a sudden loss of power when driving.
2) Cracked alloys. The 19" 296 and 326 alloys can be prone to cracking when driving over deep potholes. Give the wheels a good look over and make sure there are no signs of cracking or repairs.
3) Broken seals. Some of the rubber seals around the roof and boot can dry out and break on older cars. Get a glass of water or hose pipe and try putting water around the seals to make sure they hold.
4) Leather seat bolsters. The leather is quite tough on the seats and the bolsters quite tight for some people so wear on the driver's side bolster can happen faster than you'd expect. Not too difficult to repair/touch-up.

Enjoy!

Thank you all for the warm welcome!

35si is a bit out of my price range...

High pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure - I am scared of this now!! Should I just get it changed anyway?

Cracked alloys - checking the MOT history, it once failed because of this, assume it was replaced?

Broken seals - It's an 09 plate so it's an older car, what is the going rate to get these replaced?

Leather seat bolsters - Have the same issue on the coupe

In regards to HPFP, pulled from wiki

"HPFP problems

In at least the US market, the N54 engine has been characterized by a very large number of High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failures,[27] leading to BMW North America vehicle Lemon Law "buy backs" and reduced customer goodwill.[28] BMW's failure to solve the HPFP problem has led to serious safety concerns over dangerous sudden losses of power at highway speeds.[28] Reports of drivers being stranded are not uncommon and some have accused BMW of actively concealing the problem rather than addressing it.[28] On 26 October 2010, BMW announced a recall of vehicles with the pump in question from manufacturing years 2007–2010.[29]

In April 2009, a class action suit was filed against BMW in connection with HPFP failures.[30] BMW settled the suit in June 2010. On 26 October 2010, following an ABC News story about HPFP failures,[31] BMW announced a recall of vehicles with the pump in question from manufacturing years 2007-2010"

So if mine is an 09, should I check to see if the fuel pump has been changed, if not get it changed?

Welcome, the main problem you will find with a 35i or the 35is is the jealousy of others who want one but I am sure you will cope

If that is the main problem then I am a happy man! Just checking out subtle mods, like getting bright white angel eyes...more of a modern look IMO, on the coupe this was easy, but from reading the same H8 kit used in the E92 won't fit the E89?

So after being asked to pay a £1000 deposit, I was told I would get the car on Tuesday (today) despite the car salesman making it sound like I would get it over the weekend just gone, this was before I paid the deposit. Tuesday has come and the car is still at their other garage, over 100 miles away. They said won't be getting it tomorrow either and they may get it Thursday, but can't let me take it so I would have to wait until next week as this weekend is the long Easter weekend. I got fed up and went to see another car today...

This is a recording of the engine sound through the front kidney grilles

Does that sound right to you?

Also condensation in near side tail light.

I think you'll find the 2.0l / 4cyl is very different to a 3.0l / 6 cyl

Give it a good try before you commit is my advice!

Ps - I don't like the sound either (your file)

I agree if it's a 35 you want hold out for the right one. , or you may regret it

I regret not waiting for a 35is and mine is 3.0l - so hold on until the right one pops up!

Do a search on the forum - there's shed loads of discussion on all aspects of the engine - noise/performance/ economy !
