I have a 2017 330d Touring which seems to take an age to warm up to normal running temperature. This morning I drove over 10 miles before the temperature was anywhere near100. Is this normal? Do other owners find the same? I know it’s a big lazy Diesel engine. Any replies appreciated.

diesels do take forever to warm up - in my 330d, i can drive the 3 miles to the station, and then the three miles back again before i get any heat out the vents. even worse on cold days.

Several reasons – a couple of which the others already touched on:
1 – Most significant is the diesel engine’s higher fuel efficiency. Compared to a gasser, a diesel sends considerably more mechanical energy out (as work at the flywheel), and loses less energy into the coolant (in the form of heat) for every gallon of fuel burned. Depending on the engine, 30 - 40% less heat is lost into the cooling system than in an equivalent gasser. Net result is longer warm-up times.
2 – Except at wide open throttle, a diesel operates with considerable excess air. This excess air carries a portion of the engine's waste heat out the exhaust. Most significant at idle and light load in cold weather – some diesels will NEVER warm up if left idling in cold weather.
3 – Finally there’s simply more iron and larger cooling system in a diesel. There’s just more cold stuff that’s gotta be warmed up! ...FB

Thanks guys. That sets my mind at rest. Half a mile down the road and the Z4 is up to temperature. I suspected that the 330d slow warm up was diesel related but it is reassuring to have it confirmed.

Could be a lazy or not fully closed stat. If you have an obd dongle, I'd be watching the water temp as you drive from cold. It should get up to about 85 degrees fairly quickly and then drop a little as the stat opens. If it takes forever to warm and gets nowhere near 85, I'd be replacing the stat.

Thanks guys. I have very little technical knowledge but the gauge I am referring to is at the top of the dashboard at the the right hand side. When the car is fully warmed up it runs at 100. There are no units of measurement on it just the numbers.

Our 335xd (2015) shows oil temp so I would say yours being a later model is the same. The warm up duration of yours is very similar to ours.
Heat is available from the vents quite quickly.
However, Oil temp is a much better indicator that an engine is properly to its running / working temperature.

Exactly right Ronk. I have just been out to the garage to check. We have had the car for 8 months or so and I have never noticed the slow warm-up until this weekend. Nor did I spot the little oil can on the gauge either. How unobservant is that? I can only put it down to age, poor eye sight or stupidity or a combination of all three. Thanks for taking the trouble to clear it up for me.
