Bmw 2 series diesel with 70,000 miles.

Hi everyone. Okay not a Z4 and not for me, my daughter's partner is thinking of buying one from a friend. It's a Bmw 2 series 218 SE D with I think around 70,000 miles. This is all I know at the moment, I just wondered what the forum knew about these cars. Okay or avoid. Thank you in advance, Mike. :thumbsup:
 
Well there’s the 2 series coupe rwd, or the very different 2 series grand tourer I think it was called, that is on the fwd chassis. The 18d will be very economical but will have little in the way of performance.
 
Hi we have had all 3, Active tourer F45 , Gran tourer F46 and Coupe F22 all been good although the F45 is a 118i but really a 1.5 3 pot drinks a bit of fuel but been reliable . Engine sings through the gears more like a mini MPV but feels plusher than most other models , we have tended to stick with the M sport models just get a bit nicer trim , bigger wheels . Active and Gran are both front wheel drive although our Gran tourer was a x drive version . The 2 series coupe was a 218d M sport manual son loved it , 45mpg rear wheel drive liked getting the back end out a bit so be careful of that , he has now bought the G42 220d mht even better .
They are all well screwed together , feel good to drive 218d will likely be a 2 litre engine just de tuned , check service history , replace the oil .
 
My F22 m240i was far more comfortable then my E85.
If the car is for a young guy an F22 is a great car. Active or grand tourer less so. More a family car without the classic bmw layout. But if they have kids etc…
 
Sounds good, I've found out it's a convertible. They are both youngish, no kids yet. Thank you all for your help I will pass this on to them. :thumbsup: Just waiting for the reg number.
 
Cool, that’ll be the F23 then.
I’d thoroughly recommend an M235/240 if budget were to allow. My B58 240 would easily do over 40mpg on a run with effortless performance.

Yes they are nice but it's not for me unfortunately, it's a long standing friend of his that's moving abroad and needs to sell it. So it is what it is but it's good to hear good things about them. :thumbsup: This forum really is an amazing mine of information about all things BMW:thumbsup: Thank you all for your advice I will pass it on to him over Christmas, Mike.

It looks like 2014 and early 2015 models had the 2 litre N47 engine which did have some cam-chain issues, which is one of the reasons I sold my 2007 123d, although I believe it was less of an issue on later ones.

Then in 2015 they got the 2 litre B47 which doesn't seem to have had such problems.

As they are both 2 litre engines I imagine 220d power would only be a remap away, and if it ever matters both are Euro 6 so are ULEZ compliant.
 
I’ve found out a few more details tonight, it’s 2016 with 84000 miles, automatic diesel. I don’t know the service history but his friend is the 2nd owner and the MOT history is impeccable with only a nail in a tyre a few years ago. So from what you have said re the engine change in 2015 it should be okay.👍 Does the mileage seem a bit on the high side to you Mr Tidy?
 
It shouldn't have the troublesome N47 engine then, and that isn't a particularly high mileage for a diesel. It's less than 10,000 P.A. for a 9 year old car and so long as it has some history I wouldn't be put off.
 
So, here we go. They went to look at the car today and after driving it around my daughter insisted having an HPI check and discovered that it was written off with a Cat S in 2018. The friend that was selling the car was genuinely surprised by this revelation. He had bought the car 12 months ago from (name of dealer removed) and as it was a well known dealer he didn't feel the need to do an HPI himself. :headbang: Lucky escape:thumbsup:. The friend and his father will be going to the dealer to sort it out. Goes to show that buying a car from a dealer is no safer than buying privately. Mike.

Update. (Name of dealer removed) are not guilty after all as it turns out that it came up on the HPI check because of a number plate change from a car that had been written off. Never heard of this but something to be aware off. :thumbsup:

They’re going to pick it up tomorrow, I know it’s not a z4 but thank you to all that helped me with advice on this. It truly without a doubt is an outstanding forum on all things BMW. Plus lots of other stuff. :) :thumbsup: I love this place.
