And text from the AC Schnitzer FB page :

New 2 Series details inadvertently leaked by BMW. The new entry-level coupé that will make its market debut early next year will be 72mm longer, 26mm wider and 5mm lower than the current 1 Series Coupé. Specifications for three models were leaked – 220i, 220d and M235i – and hardly surprisingly they’re pretty similar to those of the1 Series hatch. M235i will use the same six-cylinder N55 engine as the M135i but tweaked to develop six horsepower more. Vital stats are: 326hp (240kW), 332lb ft (450Nm) of torque, 0-62mph in 5.0 seconds and 35mpg. The 220i makes do with 184hp (270kW), 199lb ft (270Nm), 0-62mph in 7.0 seconds and will return 46mpg. The 220d uses the 184hp (135kW) version of the N47 four-cylinder diesel that develops 280lb ft (380Nm) of torque and will do 0-62mph in 7.2 seconds with a potential for 62mpg economy.

Whatcha reckon ? To be frank I am wondering what the point is - have BMW Marketing have decided that they simply must have as many model designations as Audi ?

Yep the model line is so diluted now it's almost watery. Glad I have something that doesn't fit the mould. When I come to change I'll be going to a luxury brand with a simpler line. Jag, Porsche, etc

I think that's amazingly good looking, seems to look better than the 4 series.

Will be watching prices closely. Surprised at them using the nasp 2.0 though when the 1 series has a new range of turbo motors. Maybe that's just for SA.

I am really looking forward to the M2 they seem to have got the looks right in comparison with the 1 series.

I'm not sure what it is with BMW's saloon based Coupé's but, they just don't look like a Coupe at all! Does nothing for me style-wise

It's not watering down or adding to the range. It's the same bloody range with a different naming convention. It's like when Marathon became Snickers. Only the wrapper changed. Staggering how this seems to confuse so many.

Interesting that the M235i will have 8 more hp but be half a second slower to 60 than the M135i despite what appear to be better aerodynamics. Very odd.

Doesnt have those fugly headlights so looks much better to me!

Beg to differ - what you have described would be like them changing the name of the 1 series to the Ein Series, so a rebranding exercise. What they are doing with the range is more like introducing Snickers Duo, Snickers Slightly Minis and Snickers Toffee Flavour... So same product, but slightly different. What I am struggling with is how they have identified that there are distinct, profitable markets for the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, X1, X2, X3, X5, X6 ranges, with all the attendant options. They have moved away from a wider engine and trim choice within a small number of ranges (products) to a large number of products with, in a few cases, slightly fewer engine choices. Yes, they are creating coupe ranges of their own, which makes a little sense but seems pointless.

For what it's worth, I quite like how it looks, but to me it's just a 1 series coupe that's been made bigger and looks even more like a mini 3 series now.

It is, which is what's confusing, but I guess they simply want to distinguish the hatch from the coupe this time round. The 2 series makes more sense than the 4 series I think, but hey - what do I know

Isn't this just a 1-series coupe with a new name and the latest BMW Coupe design language?

Or I am missing something?

Yes. Same as the 4 series is actually the 3 series coupe. They have split the model designations in an attempt to make the model structure easier for people to understand and to enable future expansion. It seems to have had the opposite effect with most people on this forum though.

Bing. It's not the same as introducing Snickers duo, snickers minis, snickers toffee etc etc. The coupe and the cabriolet version of the 1 series already existed in the e8x series cars along with the 3 door and 5 door hatch. All they have done is call the hatches 1 series and the coupe 2 series thus splitting the old line up. This is also the case with the 3 and 4 series. So they have not added more products, if anything it's less until they bring out a cab version (which they obviously will) of the 2 and 4.

mlodey. I guess we will only tell once the car is launched and tested. Nearly every magazine has tested the M135i auto to 4.49s within a few tenths of each other. On the owners forum people have ran as low as 4.2s but OBD readings were perhaps slightly inaccurate. I dare say the 235 will be quicker than claimed as well.

Usually 1 year later at least.

Also meant to post this article that I remember from earlier in the year just after the pics in that other article came out. Oooops!
