For me the issue here is the false claims in the advert that are a problem, not that the seller has just joined.Why does this keep happening?
I thought it had been discussed a few times before and the consensus was that it was fine for people to join up just to sell.
Got to say that joining up , saying hi, lingering for a bit to get to know the place before putting up a for sale ad just won't happen. When someone decides to sell they don't wait a few weeks before making an advert.
Might be selling ours soon, not sure whether to put it on here or not in case I make a mistake in the wording

There are two separate issues, joining to sell and misleading and/or factually incorrect adverts.
I've always been against joining to sell, to me you are reaping the benefits of a forum without contributing. I've also been on car and bike forums for decades, many don't allow it and many do, at the end of the day it is up to the site admin to decide.
However putting up an ad with misleading or wrong information should definitely be challenged. I'm sure many times it's honest errors but they should still be addressed.

They're on here just like they're on the other forums hoping to snatch a bargain off some unsuspecting longstanding member owner that doesn't know the market, doesn't want the hassle of going through the sales process or usually both.
That's why I'm a big advocate of commenting on for sale adverts - it helps genuine sellers, highlights unscrupulous sellers and by default helps genuine buyers.
Agreed some comments could be made better and / or be less direct but at least those commenting have spent their time to provide a response usually with the intention of helping the seller or informing potential buyers.
Keep the adverts coming I say but get ready if they aren't presented well or inaccurate details are provided - if you don't like the feedback or can't take it in the manner it was intended there is always eBay for £14.99 or Autotrader for £89.95.

Driveway trader posts misleading, dishonest and factually incorrect advert (it even still says it has the "famous N52 engine" on Autotrader) at a price higher than he's advertising it for on Autotrader? No plce for it and it has been rightly called out.

Me too. I couldn't really care less if they have just joined as long as they are honest and open about the car for sale (and make a bit of an effort) for their free advert.

So five pages later it turns out he/she is breaking the forum rules anyway.

Or, there’s also Car & Classic…which is totally £Free or there’s Pistonheads…which is also £Free, if you were a proper car enthusiast and joined their website early enough.
These have the additional benefits of not having to tolerate your advert, your car or your persona being blighted or insulted by a cluck of poke-nose, busy-body, self-appointed ‘expert’ pedants; whose filters between the opinions in their brains and what comes out of their mouths, or is committed to public display via their keyboards, are broken.
But, they clearly do have some actual insight into knowing that it’s wrong to do so because when they get called out on it and taken to task, they effect a temporary repair on their filters and manage to ‘behave’ like gentlemen (for a while) and go silent.
Sadly, however, the repairs appear to be only temporary ‘bodges’ which then fail again after a few weeks. Restraint is then lost and the leaks start spewing their unsolicited vitriolic garbage, yet again.

I'm curious... you were annoyed that your friend was sold a car by a seller you believe to be dishonest, but you're upset that a clearly dishonest seller is being called out in this thread?
