BMW 108 Split Rim Alloys

Hi guys,

I've recently had my alloys refurbed and new Vredestein Tyres fitted. I got the wheels rebalanced afterwards and the guy said I have 2 buckled wheels (on the inside edge) and a third with a slight buckle. He also noticed that all 4 wheels are 8j whereas I thought the rears were supposed to be 8.5j. I guess I never noticed the buckles with the run flats on as they must have been balanced out.

Could you advise me as to whether it's right that all 4 are 8j please?

Also, They managed to balance out the buckles only for the wheel wobble to return after a few miles driving. Wierd I know. I need to get the wheels in to a good company, preferably in Liverpool who can make the wheels round again. Any recommendations?

Best,

Ian

Hi Ian..
The fronts should be 8J x 18" and the rears 8.5J x 18"..
In effect, the rears are 0.5" wider..

Ideally also, tyres: Fronts - should be 225-40-18 and the Rear tyres (on 8.5J rims) should be 255-35-18..

IMHO: Any decent, professional refurb' company would of checked the rims on a balancer, PRIOR to stripping them down and splitting the 2 piece split rims.. Simply, to ensure: no flat spots; no buckles; no cracks or any other damage, BEFORE starting work on them etc..
Thus, avoiding the issues you unfortunatley now have..

Best of luck with getting them straightened, without causing any damage to the freshly refurb'd rims..

Hope the above helps?

Cheers..

Ok thanks guys. How can I measure myself if they are 8j or 8.5j? I think the tyre place that balanced the wheels must have got it wrong...

There are markings, stamped etc, on the Inside of one of the 5 point stars..
The 8J will say: 8J x 18 EH2 IS47
The 8.5J will say: 8 1/2J x 18 EH2 IS50

As your rims have just been refurb'd, these should be crystal clear..

Cheers..

please for the love of god do NOT go by the stamps on the star. Lay them on their side next to eachother, you can see the difference.

As you can bolt a 8J star to a 8.5J drum, so you'd cause yourself some problem there.

Well, I've just measured with a ruler from the inside edge of the rim to the outside and the rears are definitely wider than the fronts so I think that answers that one!!Thanks God!!

Still need to get the buckles out of them though so if anyone knows any good repairers in Liverpool, please let me know

Cheers

Ian
