Bluetooth won’t connect for music.

I’ve had my 2010 zed for a few weeks now and haven’t been able to play music from my iPhone 13. Calls work fine but no music. So I bought a CarPlay box from eBay and now I have music through the AUX port but the quality is crap. Is it a software problem that I can’t connect my music via Bluetooth?

You probably have telephone only bluetooth..media support bluetooth was an option..check your vin decoder to see!

Aux port quality may improved by adjusting the respective gain on each device and also maybe switch cleaner in the socket!

Is telephone only Bluetooth a coding thing or a hardware thing?

Serious s**t hardware.. MULF ULF etc AnnubisZed can explain..not trivial for mere humans..basically an expensive BMW box sitting on the MOST network..needs coding as well..

Check VIN build to confirm

Looks like it’s missing. I have USB/audio interface.

I'm not sure BUT if you have USB interface that needs a magic box..in which case it MAY be code-able..easiest thing is to wait for AnubisZed as he has retrofitted this stuff..

And as if by magic in I pop :D

MULF2 ($633, $6FL) = Bluetooth calls + AUX + USB, with optional Album Art.
Combox ($644, $6VC, $6FL) = Bluetooth calls and music + AUX + USB, with optional Album Art.

Yes, you have the MULF2 module, so you can't add music streaming to it without surgery (ie; a Combox retrofit).
Certainly try cleaning your AUX socket with proper switch cleaner. The socket is susceptible to Verdigris, which will affect the connection. Also depends how good the mmi (CarPlay) box is, and how the settings within the box are set up, as some can have a graphic equaliser in them. Also you may have a volume setting in the box, I'd not set it to max as this may distort, and you also have an AUX input level within the "External Devices" menu in the iDrive (scroll over AUX, press the controller and then turn the controller left/right to again the higher level. This one can be max'd)

Is there a lot involved with the retrofit? There is a combox on eBay for £147. Or is there other bits that are needed?

Swapping from the MULF2 to the Combox is a relatively straightforward retrofit.
You need the combox, main plug and the you need to swap wires around plus some coding.
Here's a much cheaper combox for sale...
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/226363714508?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=4gE5sDg4SPa&sssrc=2051273&ssuid=4gE5sDg4SPa&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

PM me if you want to discuss details as I can do the coding side for you

My MMI is connected via Aux; at first I was not OK with the sound, but then I went into the MMI settings and turned the audio output down to I think maybe 50%. This made a huge difference, sound is now perfectly good for my requirements.

Yes, it's not a good idea to have the output volume at full as it'll distort the sound, but you can have your AUX input at full though
