Hi :)

So, I picked up the Z4 on Saturday - a 2011 30i with the 676 Professional sound system.
A question on this though. I can't seem to find a way to pair the phone and I am wondering if it does not have bluetooth.
I did a VIN decode but surely they did not do a Z4 without bluetooth when you have the 676 system??

At a cost of £565, option 676 was the BMW Business loudspeaker option and like 677 which was the BMW Professional loudspeaker option (which cost £855) did not come with Bluetooth Phone Preparation as standard.

If you have the iDrive system you need to see option 633 or option 644 if you dont have iDrive - if the car has neither option you dont have Bluetooth Phone Preparation.

Bluetooth is a separate option from the 676 option though - that is just a speaker system.

Here's a link to the 2011 Pricelist - and seems you need either options 609, 6NN, 633, 644 or 7HP from what I can make out. Which options are showing for your particular car?

Thanks for the answers and the speed of reply:thumbsup:
Yep, no bluetooth...

So now a (not so) young man's gaze turns to carplay (I think that is the name) systems with a screen and all those modern features completely missing from the car currently!
Any recommendations on what will be a good choice?
No idrive system present and a storage area where the screen would/will go.

All E89s had basic Bluetooth for phone calls…you needed ‘Bluetooth extended media’ if you want to play music from your phone through the audio system..

Two options for car play here you’re at..

Simple 10.5” cheap Chinese car play only screen for around £100 or less

Second option an android head unit with plastic moulding to fit into your tray space..with optional pseudo idrive controller…£250-£600 ish depending on quality, capabilities, support and they do car play ..

I'm sorry to say but NO E89 came with Bluetooth (calls) standard at all, they were all options for all years (unless specific option packs for promotions). I've even worked on E89's with iDrive that still didn't have it!
Even though you may have the steering wheel button, the multifunction wheel just had the button.

That 2011 pricelist shows 'Bluetooth hands-free facility' - option 6NN at £250 as the minimum requirement in terms of cost.

Gosh…really…that’s a school day…how the flock could they sell a car in the Uk in 2009 without Bluetooth…😳🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

Thanks for the answers so far.
I was wondering. Is it possible to retrofit the original bluetooth to the car?
Is the wiring there and it just needs a module fitting, or is it a lot more work than that?

I am not sure about the Android units yet as I don't want something that looks a little cheaper in a car that - as we all know - has a high quality interior.

Apologies for all the questions but I like to learn from others with more knowledge and experience.

The original radios (both Standard and iDrive) had an external module for Bluetooth. This wiring isn't there by default, it would have to be a retrofit.
Now for the Standard radio there was a later spec unit that had Bluetooth (calls only) built-in, and this can be retrofitted to replace your current one (they look identical from the outside), you'd need a microphone and housing to go with it.
If you wanted to go down this route I can help you with all the specs on this, I also have a How-To on it.

Thank you for the suggestion. :)
The boss (wife) would prefer the original look is maintained so the retrofit of the later spec unit and a mic is going to be what I will try.
I will look out your how-to on your (very good, I watched the carplay install guide last night) channel.
Now, where the heck do I find the bits and I suspect the headunit will need coding to the car?

Alas I did this to mine a long, long time ago, way before I started the YouTube channel. So here is a Word document of the How-to...

You'll have to ignore most of the links as they'll no longer work, but there are photos and part numbers, also ignore the aftermarket microphone, as it didn't work.
Yes you'll need some coding, maybe, it's really down to your options you have compared to the donor cars options. For example , if you had PDC and the replacement radio came from a car without PDC then the warning tones wouldn't work.
The better radio also has USB input built-in (swapping the current AUX socket for a USB/AUXsocket), so you could have a controllable Bluetooth music streamer added (y)

Here's a radio, correct version...

I do offer a fitting service for these as well, if you'd be interested in that or any further information then you can send me a DM
