Bluetooth Problems

Hi all!!

I've had my Z for approx 6 hours, and I'm having loads of problems connecting my iphone. I've trawlled through upteen suggestions but to no avail so I apologise if the answer is out there and I've missed it.

I have a factory fitted phone already with a slot for a sim card but I want to be able to use my iphone in the car for obvious reasons! the factory fitted phone pairs to the car so there must be an active bluetooth connection but I can't seem to get the car go into pairing mode for my phone, whenever I press the talky face on the steering wheel (as I've been informed that this will put in pairing mode whilst ignition is in position 1) it just keeps telling me to insert sim card!! I have no buttons to press on the centre console and I'm now completely flumoxed!

its a 2005 3.0i se auto roadster

thanks in advance :)

Welcome to the forum :D

no idea about your phone problem though - I thought the bluetooth system should have a pairing button in the center storage compartment cover - the bit that comes down between the seats, mine certainly does. not heard of the factory fit phone though :?

I can't directly help either, but not all Z4s are equiped with the pairing button (e.g. my 2006 dose not). I have been able to pair several different phones by initiating the pairing request on the phone. For example, on my Blackberry Curve, I used "Bluetooth Setup", then "Add Device", then "Search For Devices" which detected the car as a headset. I am not familiar wiht the iPhone, but I would guess it has some similar capabiltiy.

Hi,

when I just try and get my iphone to pair it just says searching......................... :headbang:

I've never had a problem with other bluetooth kits.

aaarrgghh!

I'd need more information to understand what phone is fitted and if it's hardwired or bluetooth?

For the bluetooth setup not all phones pair with all generations of ULF module used by BMW. You have an older model Zed so chances are it will not pair with an iphone.

Can't hekp with the iphone on oyur car but I do know people have had to upgrade to later model ULF's to enable them to connect. My own retrofit system pairs to phones easily just by pressing a pir button, not the steering wheel 'talk' button.

Thanks for all the offers of help :D

I've tried the key in, out, position 1 & 2 to no avail!!

The phone I do have in the car is a standard BMW (I presume as its factory fit) phone which is cordless, in the dropdown centre console and when its turned on it pairs and then just says "insert sim" on it. when I press the button on the steering wheel the radio display also says "insert Sim" I hope I can get it to work as I'm not really happy about getting another sim card :?

id guess its just a cordless phone, the sim goes in the base bit by the looks of the diagram, not seen anything like that since the early 90's!

the iphone can be a bit of a bugger with bluetooth, i had a sony hands free in the z when i bought it, but it would not pick up the phone book so it was just a big headset. i have since upgraded my tomtom to a 730 which does pick up the phonebook, but it wont read out sms - its a nice feature on the tomtom i guess but no real loss. it may also depend on your iphone, the 3g one seems to have less bluetooth than the earlier ones, i have a 2nd gen 16gb iphone.

I would be looking next in the boot on the firewall behind the passenger seat for a raised shape in the carpet.
See this thread http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=4819&p=68326&hilit=+bluetooth+retrofit#p68326

That's where the ULF module is built in and IMHO by lifting the carpet and checkit it has a ULF module is the only way to be certain what you have (other than going to the dealer)

If you have bluetooth you should also have a card with a 4 digit pairing number on it that would be input to the phone to pair when both are in pairing mode.

gannet - that's not a bluetooth set up is it? Never actually seen a Zed with one of those

dunno - just thought Id have a look to see if I could find any clues...

First off let me say I am by no means an expert and just putting in my 2 cents...

If the built-in phone you have is blue tooth then you may not be able to pair up your iPhone because your built-in connects first. You can pair up several phones to the car but the first one detected is the one that the car will connect to. Can you disconnect the built-in phones power and try connecting the iPhone again?

Now if your built-in is not blue tooth then all this is just words on a page...

Ok I give in, i'm way too blonde for this problem :)

I'm having a parrot bluetooth fitted on friday so it will solve the problem the easy way
