Bluetooth not working

Hi, I can’t get Bluetooth working on my 07 M E86 (it has the option and I have the code), my car has the pop up Sat Nav screen.
Following the instructions (pressing the button on the central console, ignition etc) it doesn’t do anything, no pairing notification, telephone menu says searching then activate phone, can’t get it to say anything else, my phone (tried 2 gen iPhones) doesn’t find anything in Bluetooth devices. Any ideas?

Assuming it’s just broken, could replacing the module fix it? And if so, can you just swap it without any coding?

Thanks!

I believe it’s the ULF module that does the bluetooth. Loads on ebay but also loads of variants so you need to check the part no. I’m not sure if it needs coding or not.

I will mess with it some more before I look for a replacement module, but if it’s cheap enough I will give it a go.

A grom unit is probably cheaper and provides less hassle with added functionality.
Yeah maybe, but I would prefer to get the oem thing working, if not I will look at grom.

I always found it to be a pain in the arse saw this guide posted on here and its worked perfectly every time

1. Get your phone to the Bluetooth On/Off/Devices settings page and switch off Bluetooth.
2. With KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION, open phone compartment (drop down door in the rear panel behind the seats) and press and hold the Bluetooth (man shouting!) button for 3 seconds.
3. Then with the button still pressed, insert key into ignition and turn key two clicks (where all the warning lights come on).
4. JUST AS THE SAT-NAV STARTS TO OPEN, release the Bluetooth button.
5. Quickly turn on Bluetooth on the phone. Timing seems to be critical and it took a couple of attempts to get the elusive pairing phone prompt.
6. Once at the prompt, I just entered the 4 digit Bluetooth key into my phone and it connected straight away

If that doesn't work it means you have too meany phones connected, in that case, follow steps 1-4 then wait 2 seconds and then hold down the Bluetooth (man shouting!) button again for around 10 seconds until you hear a beep that means its cleared all previously paired phones.

Once you have cleared all paired phones repeat steps 1-6

FYI I do not have my contacts synced anymore as the more recent android updates have broken that feature (I think anything android 5.0 and above wont pair contacts )

I tried it a few times, no banana, also disconnected the battery for half an hour to clear things, no good :-(
I don’t know if it’s the button on the central console, or the bt module.

I feel your pain. I have exactly the same problem. Still to be resolved but I suspect the ULF module at fault.

I will get the ulf part number and see if I can find a 2nd, but also wondering if it could be a coding problem, I have history if a software upgrade, wondering if they didn’t enable the bt, if that is a code option?

Is it responding in any way?

Have you removed all paired devices as per instructions above. Car is limited to 5 devices only.

It’s not responding at all, can’t pair or delete, but I thought removing battery for half an hour would reset it anyway.

Thought you said it displayed searching on the screen.

I’d go the 3xtra step above to ensure it’s deleted all existing pairings. From memory it says searching even when there are already 5 devices paired.

The searching I am seeing is I believe it searching for an already paired phone, it’s not in pairing mode.. I can’t delete anything because it doesn’t work, I removed battery, which hopefully would lose any existing pairing, still doesn’t work, so suspect the module.

Yeh, same here - can never get it to go into pairing mode. I even had the main dealer put it on diagnostics and clear all the previous phones out...still wouldn't go into pairing mode. They were pretty clueless after that but recommended a new ULF module at some crazy cost (even though the diag said the module was not faulty). They checked the button on the centre pull down and that was fine. My thread here....http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=99347

Glad I’m not the only one 😜 I will get the ulf module out and have a look.

Out of interest do you still have the phone cradle attached in the door of the centre console (just above the Bluetooth pair button) if so remove it and try again.

Also FYI disconnecting the battery doesn't delete paired phones

Ah ok, that’s good to know about the paired phones! In the centre console I have a sprung tray and a connector, but nothing connected.

FWIW
pdf version of upgrade comms manual covering bluetooth connection etc etc available
