Bluetooth MFSW track change?

Hello all,

I installed the following Bluetooth system on my coupe a few months back:

It works well, connects instantly, the streaming quality is decent, the mic works for calls (bit quiet but that's okay), and the MFSW buttons work for volume. Just not for track changing (I stream through Spotify).

It uses the AUX channel as the way into the system, and I thought that might be the reason why it only worked on volume.

So I opened up the harness at the back, found a live and a ground, placed aside the harness extension it comes with, took the pin connectors apart and rerouted it through the CD changer plug instead, in the hope that the track change function on the MFSW would now work.

Alas not.

Would anyone know a way around this? With 6 points for using your phone these days I'd quite like to be able to change tracks on the MFSW instead of having to take my eyes off the road.

If it's Bt to the small module then aux into the headunit it won't do track up/down.
If you want that feature you'd need a BT adapter that replaces the cd connection

If I put it another way, is anyone here able to change tracks with the MFSW track change buttons when streaming music via Bluetooth?

Hi Owen,

I installed the bluemusic adapter, which connects via the CD changer connection (I did not have a CD changer so the harness was lying idle), and it allows for track changing via the MFSW.

Thanks Calps, that may be what the previous owner had installed already, but there was no mic for calls, hence my replacing it with the one I currently have (which works fine for streaming and calls, just no MFSW track change as it uses the AUX channel).

I'm trying to get my head around the radio outputs at the back, because presumably they're getting input from the steering wheel buttons to send the signal to the changer?

Check this out first -just changed CD player from Radio/CD/CD2(in boot)? Aux the each function worke on which ever player was connected
 
Thanks for responding 2k35is, unfortunately the link within your link seems to be dead, and in Googling Parrot bluetooth it came up with all sorts of stuff.

Unfortunately the previous owner had fitted a Bluetooth system in the boot which didn't have a mic. So I disconnected that to fit the replacement above, which works fine just not the track change.

I suppose my ask is does anyone know... on the square block of radio outputs on the harness behind the radio, which pins I'd need to tap into to get the CD changer signal? I can hopefully do it at the head unit end then and not have to venture into the boot again.

I'm trying to learn rather than get an auto sparky out!

Okay so have definitely confirmed the beige plug into the square harness at the back of the stereo goes to the CD changer. There's a white/ brown signal wire, then two signal " AF + " wires (white/red and white/blue, respectively), which I'm presuming do the CD and track signal changes? Not sure if anyone here knows?

I have tried to borrow that plug and socket for the Bluetooth harness I have (listed above), but while it connects and plays, it doesn't change tracks.

There must be a way on the square outputs block going into the radio to take the signal to change tracks on the CD changer and tap into that signal for the Bluetooth module? There aren't too many wires involved here?

It's not just a case of connecting some wires together. The device you bought is just a BT receiver wired to the aux in with no comprehension of track change signals, particularly whatever protocol BMW uses on the control lines that the changer will understand.

What you want (and I'm in the same boat, just never have the time to look!) is to find a BT kit that does both carphone and music duties which is also compatible with the steering wheel controls.
 
Makes perfect sense, thanks for clarifying. From what I can see there are three wires going from the radio output block to the CD changer in the boot, so I'm presuming there must be some track change signal being sent down those wires. Just wondering if there's a way of tapping into those, but it seems we're waiting for a product to be made to allow that to happen. Any electrical engineers on here who fancy earning some beer tokens?!

Interpreting the key press data line is straight-forward; but you're not going to find a Bluetooth module that has control line inputs for next/previous.
