Bluetooth, 4-1/70 and iPhone 3Gs

I've got a Z4 with bluetooth (dealer said it did and theres a bulge in the boot). The software version is 4-1/70 and I'm trying to pair with a iPhone 3Gs. Searches I've done here suggest it should work and I can get the car to say "pairing bluetooth", then "searching ..." but when I make my phone discoverable it never seems to work. Eventually the car says "Activate Phone" *shrug*.

I don't currently have the bluetooth code and have emailed the dealer .. I'll have a look at the ULF unit tomorrow (when its light).

Should it work? if so what am I doing wrong .. I was at least hoping to get to the point where the phone sees the car.

Hi Rich, I had the same problem, In mine I had to clear the previously attached devices as there were already the maximum of 4 registered. If that still doesn't work, clear the devices from your iPhone.

So for future reference; success.

My car is a Z4 2.5si sport on a 56 plate.

1st, get the pin code. Mine was on the label on the back of the ULF. To get to it follow the instructions here: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=20747. I didn't have a sticker on the top/bottom so i had to undo the three nuts holding the (black) metal bracket to the firewall. I was then able to bend the unit out (from the right) and took a photo of the label.

2nd, getting the car into pairing mode - I'm not sure everything here is needed but it worked repeatedly for me:
1. turn car off (if its on) and take the key out
2. wait for 30secs or so - I waited until the GPS disk stopped spinning
3. press and hold the "shouting bluetooth" button on the oddments tray (between the seats) for about 3-4 seconds
4. put key into ignition (position 0 IIRC)
5. continue to hold "shouting bluetooth" button for about 3-4 seconds
6. turn key to position 2 (just about to start engine); continue to hold "shouting bluetooth" button for about 3-4 seconds
7. at this point, in my car, the satnav screen is rotating - let go of the "shouting bluetooth" button
8. the satnav screen should stop showing the standard start menu and switch to the telephone one; saying "bluetooth pairing" if it doesn't switch off and try again.
9. moments later your iPhone should see the car, enter the pin and your done. I paired both a iPhone 4 and 3Gs.

Things to note; it appears that when the car starts (normally) it goes looking for paired phones. If there is more than one phone available it chooses the last one which was paired .. thus pair secondary phones first and your main phone last.
