Blue tooth in Z4

So retrofitting a widescreen in the X5 today got me thinking about my mobile comms in the Z4. On the X5 I have the benefit of a fully integrated system microphone in the overhead and use of the car speaker system - perfect.

On the Z4 I have nothing, so aside an expensive dealer blue tooth system what options are there to connect my blue tooth phone to the Z? I'm not after the cheap Halfords plug in adaptors and don't want the ridiculous ear piece.

Has anyone done anything that can be built in looks unobtrusive and ideally uses the cars speaker system?

2003 3.0, Professional Nav. CD and 6 disk changer - if any of that is relevant

But those earpieces look so cool, especially when they wear them out and about, sad bastards!

Parrots are supposed to be ok, personally i'd find a 2nd hand OEM BT system, I used to slag it off something awful in the M3 but my Blackberry connects perfectly to the BT in the z4m and is nice and clear and has a good volume, perfect solution for me

The ear pieces are ghey, but I hate my stupid corded ear piece just as much, it's just more inconvenient because of that damn wire. I have thought of getting one just for convenience sake but they're so obnoxious looking with that goofy blue light  . I get a lot of phone calls and holding the phone up to my ear while I work is not an option. Still can't bring myself to get one yet though, at least my ear piece doesn't light-up with a blue light. Maybe they'll get smaller and less obvious in a year or so...I'll wait.

I have 3 of the blue tooth earpieces and they all sit in a drawer unused. I seem to get them free with each new phone I trade to.

Holding the phone to the ear while driving is no longer an option with ever increasing fines and licence penalty points. (How did we use to manage pre sat nav with a road atlas on the passenger seat and paper directions on the steering wheel, especially at night...lol)

Taffy I'll look into the parrot option and see what I can find on ebay.

Any more thoughts?

there is quite a few nokia/ericsson bluetooth kits out there. We get them fitted to brand new and used cars all the time at work. I have one on my girlfriends car too. good kit. mutes the radio on its own too.

OEM BT is the mutt's though

Have it on both of our Beemers. I liked it so much on the wife's nearly-new 3-series that I spec'd it on the Z4MC.

I must be one of the few that think the OEM offering is useless. I can barely here a thing and who ever is on the other end of the phone can't hear me.

I know it's not the phone as I work in telecoms and change my handsets fairly often (I've had the car since march and I am on my 5th handset)

12th Gen? I knew of 2.

So have you sourced loom leads, antennae and a pairing button or are oyu going for some part kit?

ULF = BMW Bluetooth module, I believe there are 13 types depending on manufacture date.

i paid a little too much but i was going out so i cudnt be bothered to wait any longer.

im gonna get the bimmernav retrofit kit prolly... not sure if ill do it myself yet tho..

OK so I'm making progress. Decided to do an OEM retrofit and I have my ULF module being shipped.

Snapped an ebay bargain :D :D :D so happy with that and now just need to get leads, mike, etc sorted.

Andy let me kow how you get on sourcing the retrofit kit, else I'll have to get creative to hook it all up.

Does anyone know how well the microphone works with the top down? Does it cut out the wind and road noice so the person on the other end can hear you or is it useless?

time to get back on with this, but both suppliers are from the usa and surely we shud be able to get the kits cheaper here or from germany?

$375

$330:

both prices + p&p & only if u have the ulf module already..

but wondering if we can prices for the proper retrofit from a dealer. Can only see this on realoem which altho it looks like only the cradle the name says otherwise... http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do ... g=84&fg=95

I've ordered a kit from bimmernav for the X5 first. Shipped before Xmas so should be here any day. Got my own ULF off ebay.

With the $ at 2:1 I think the US is probably cheaper than anywhere in the UK

Bit of an update here:

I ordered the Bimmernav harness kit for the X5 in December and with shipping, customs delays and Xmas it took a month to get here :headbang: . Finally installed it, along with an aux amp to boost signal and my Ebay sourced ULF module.

Fitted it, tweeked, paired and sorted and it's awesome to use :D :driving: :D (after getting through some nasty teething problems, mainly faulty BimmerNav kit).

So back to the Z4 and I'm thinking of doing the same, so has anyone actually retrofitted OEM into the Z4? What experience do you have of it.
Is the mike and harness already preinstalled in 2003?
By separate post I'll be looking at alternative steering wheels to give me MFSW and associated features.

(I'm not interested in Parrot and other aftermarket solutions however good / easy they are to do, as once sorted the OEM is the biz.)

You are missing the cables for the phone and no, there is no mike.

I have retrofitted the OEM satnav kit in a Z4 with Blue Tooth and one without, and the cabling was different (i.e. missing 2 cables at the radio end in the second connector block in the quadblock).

THe retrofit kit I assume will have those cables in there
