Blue smoke

Morning all,

Took the zed out for a small test drive yesterday and noticed blue smoke coming from the exhaust. I was only going up and down a cul-de-sac for about 5 minutes, but at about 2k rpm there's a fair bit of smoke. Not absolutely loads, but enough for me to feel conscious about it. The car has been sat not moving for about a year now so just wondering if maybe that has something to do with it?

From the research I've done, I've deduced that its either the CCV getting clogged up with s**t, and needs replacing, or the valve stem seals. Both jobs don't sound the nicest to do.

Questions:
1. how easy are both these jobs to do?
2. anyone else have any idea on anything else it could potentially be? I've recently fitted a new cat and a new rocker cover gasket.
3. Is this something an OBD reader would pick up on?

CCV is not that difficult. Just take the air box off to give you room. Easier with the intake manifold off though. Don't buy the cold weather version as that is difficult to fit!

An OBD reader wouldn't show either of those issues.
 
If it’s been sat that long would it not be wise to give it a good Italian tune up first? May just need the cobwebs blowing out.
 
Has the car done excessive mileage. Could be engine trouble but if it's been sat that long I would also suggest a good run
 
If it’s pumping out smoke it’s possible to damage the CAT if you leave it long enough. It’s easy to check if the CCV is blocked without running the engine.
It’s also surprisingly easy to burn through all your oil in a remarkably short time (don’t ask me how I know….)
 
yep, N46. The car doesn't have an mot at the moment, but looking to "get one booked in" to try and give it a propper run. I don't think it's really been ran up to temp for around a year. Next time I'm down I'll let it idle for as long as I can, see if that will help to clear whatever is causing the smoke. I did recently replace the cat, so potentially that needs "burning in" or something like that?

(In all honesty these were issues I have come to expect trying to manage a project car and sixth form)
 
Im still around!:) Its more than likely oil has got past the valve guide seals after sitting for that long. Best thing would be to drive it moderately until up to temp then give it a bit of a thrash just to around 4k through the range. Mine used to do it if left stood for a while and a bit of a thrash sorted it.

I have a brand new unused CCV if you want it for cheap amongst other stuff for the 2.0
