Blue Smoke On Start Up

Hi,

Started the car today after leaving it parked up on a curb since Friday night. When I turned the car on there was alot of bluesmoke out of the exhaust and the rev counter was jumping up and down around the 1,000rpm mark (like it was struggling a bit).

I drove the car for about an hour and it appears to be fine now. I have read that blue smoke is burning oil but why would it be be burning oil? Its never done this before and I have parked it on a curb before.

Any ideas people :(

I Had a similar problem last year, big puff of blue smoke on occasional start up, turned out to be a blocked breather, basically caused by to many short jouneys which gave me build up of the old yellow gunk,

DO NOT go to bmw with this problem, they will quote you new this and new that, they wanted over £500 !! to fix it

My local indy, took off the breather (and a bit I cant remember the name of), cleaned it, put it back, no problems since, been absolutly fine,,, £70 !!!!

This Happens with the Boxster alot. If its sat for a while or like mentioned done alone of short journeys.

Before going to any Indy, take it out for a nice long drive with a combination of normal driving and higher speed driving. I would avoid country lanes and maybe go for a motor way blast instead.

Note:

Im not a mechanic and take no responsibility it its more serious than under use.

I don't do that many short journeys though, more than 40 mins every other day really. Is there anything I can check out without taking it to a garage? (i.e. removing the sparks and checking them or checking the oil levels?)

I have had lumpy running a couple of times, both times after just moving the car off of the driveway from cold the last time it was used. Engine therefore not given time to get even remotely warm.

Did you do anything like that the last time it was used before it smoked?

I started the car after leaving if for about 24 hours after driving it for about 45mins. It was parked on a curb so I don't know if that has anything to do with the smoke?

I'll try mine out today - it's been sitting outside a little over a week, was alright when I parked it up so will come back to say if it does anything similar...

+1 Dampness from low usage and cold weather can cause these ice/freeze and fail. Only a few weeks ago someone had theirs break causing the inlet manifold end to suck up oil from the sump = 1 seized engine :(

It is worth whipping it off and giving it a good clean. At the very least give the car a good run for now. If you start it and the engine runs very lumpy, stop it immediately.

EDIT: Sorry just saw you do longer trips, still worth cleaning it though :)
