Blue Ray/HDTV

I was never one to go out and buy a HDTV. My plasma has served me well for a number of years and watching crap in HD didn't really appeal to me.

Then, I gota new laptop (Sony Vaio F Series) which had a blue ray player adn a HD resolution. I then found Band of Brothers in HMV today in Blue Ray format. So, I thought I would try it and see what all the fuss is about.

You know when people find God and convert? Well, that is me. I am blown away by the sheer quality of it. All the old boy talking heads telling of their experiences.....you could see every line on their face, every individual eye lash, the hair poking out of the nose. Fantastic. Must go get an HDTV so I can HDMI my laptop into it.

I used to say the same about HD. I needed to buy a new TV so I bought an HD ready one a few years ago. The first time I saw Blue Ray HD was from my Sony PS3. I was converted straight away!I Now have SKY HD!

I've been converted to the Blu-ray - Plasma HDTV for almost a year now and it does blow me away with excellent source recordings.

You think that is good, go get a demo of 3D. I watched a demo in Comet the other night, i was blown away with the quality of the 3D. The Playstation 3 is getting an update tomorrow to enable 3D content, 3D blurays are on the way as are some computer games. Comet were doing a deal for £999 you get the samsung tv, 2 pairs of glasses and a bluray player.

It's about time you guys got with the program..... I bought a 40"Sony Wega about a zillion years ago that was "HD Ready" and haven't looked back. That poor old sony didn't have HDMI (it wasn't invented yet) but it sure looked good with an HD signal through the strange connector it had. Now it's all Samsung HD and Blu-Ray. Another thing to bear in mind is the connections you use...use the HDMI cables as often as you can, they are better than component video etc.... and spend as much as you can afford on the cables ..it matters ... Kinda like putting regular petrol in a Z4 and expecting decent performance.....don't do it..

Mate, I had DVD the minute it came out. I also jumped on the HD bandwagon with both HD DVD and Bluray as soon as they were released, I too had an HD tv when HDMI hadnt been made yet. I always have to have the latest kit when cash permits.

Didn't they do some consumer tests recently that proved the whole 'better/super duper/gold plated connectors/100% unobtanium strands/sell your family, your body and perhaps your soul to buy it' HDMI cables were actually no better than just a decent £10 one? After all, it is a digital signal, as long as all the 0s and 1s get through a short length of cable (in domestic situations, most will probably be 1-2 metres tops), it'll make absolutely no difference, right?

(or did I misread this and let the irony slip past me? :P )

Sorry, 3D is definitely not for me  get sore eyes and dizziness after a while.

No point spending wads on HDMI cables any half decent ones will do.

Playalistic and Dev: Being the cynic I am, I believed as you do that the cables make no difference until I got stupid one day and bought a high end (not the highest ) cable. I could see the difference immediately...now I do believe that the superduper unobtainium ones are probably no real discernible difference to the normal folks among us so I stop before that point but the cheapies are definitely not as good.

And I was poking fun at all the guys that don't get all the latest gadgets ... :poke: :poke:
I haven't gone to 3d yet but it's just a matter of time (not real keen on having to wear another pair of glasses to see the effect as I already need glasses to see the damned TV anyway)

can you describe this difference?

Yeah - when you look over the back of the TV the real expensive cables exude quality. Nice connectors, quality insualtion and writing along their length. From here on the sofa I can't see any difference.....

Joking aside I always go somewhere between cheapest I can find on Ebay and top flight

Been and HD viewer for 4 years since splashing on a then top flight plasma.

like going from 780 to 1080 ...+ some better colour intensity , and my limp started to go away from the lighter wallet.

I'm holding off on 3D at the moment even though it is impressive. I don't think it will be long before the 3D will work without the need of the glasses! I just have a feeling that having to use glasses, after the "honeymoon period" was over I wouldn't bother with the glasses for normal viewing, just the odd films.

We eought a 50" Panasonic plasma and Bluray last week, also upgraded to SkyHD, I'm literally blown away by the difference.

Anyone who says they can't see the difference is talking rubbish, it is almost as big a jump as VHS was to DVD.

As for the interconnects, as has been said up to a point you get what you pay for, then its the old law of diminishing returns, I remember when I first changed the bell wire that came with my original surround sound amp years ago for some decent stuff again the difference was noticable the instant you turned everything on.

Not convinced on the 3D thing yet especially if you still need to wear the glasses, I'm so old I can remember Tomorrow's World doing a 3D experiment back in the day when a 22" cathode ray tube was considered big, if it could work on an old cathode ray why do we now need yet another type of TV?

 I think I can remember that Tomorrows World programme! Didn't the Radio Times give away free 3D glasses? :P

To be fair the new 3D is leaps and bounds better than it used to be. It really is very good on the Blue Ray players, but I still think it's too new to buy into the technology yet (this is from someone who had a Betamax player!! And yes. it was better than VHS!! :P ).

Betamax rules   until DVD's anyway. I paid $1300 for my first one, the first front load Sony...ooh it was slick.

Kinda like a pedal bike next to a Z4 now isn't it..
Rumor has it that Sony invented the VHS as well and sold it off as an inferior design .....
