Blowing Exhaust

Evening

I am having problems with my exhaust where the down pipe is joined to the back of the exhaust. When the car gets warm it blows at this point. I took it to the local quickfit who did the free inspection and told me where the problem lies but they obviously quoted me a huge amount of money, 1800 to fix the problem if they can't get the bolts out :(

I'm pretty sure that the bolts should come out with a bit of warming but then the flanges my disintegrate and I'd be left with a huge bill. Is this a common problem and if so what is the usual remedy? Finally can anyone recommend a mechanic in Ruislip area of London who could undertake the work?

Thanks for any help in advance.

Sam

they aren't bolts.. they're studs and need drilling out.
I did this myself with a hacksawn and a powerdrill - took about 30 minutes.
set of high tensile bolts and a new gasket will see you right!

Thanks for the tip. I think for now I will stick with the hacksaw and high tensile bolt option but thanks for the straight pipe idea I'll keep it in mind :)

Hi guys, this just happened to mine! Did you both replace the gaskets out were they fine? RealOEM seems to suggest using M10x40 bolts. Is this correct.

Oh and big LOL at the kwik fit quote!! Idiots.

And my poor Zed, blowing nicely at the same point as diagnosed by indie but I took the car away...foolishly!

OK so I'd read about the flange repair (split, bolted, titanium repair kit) but having been in contact with the maker (Torque Andy), they only fit 60mm pipes, not the 50mm ones on the 3.0i. Was going to source and drop parts off at indie to fit. So now it's worse, one week later and having scraped on a speed bump, it rattles now under load.

Can I ask then guys, what's the options? What if the clamps are goosed? Quite sure it's the studs but indie was talking about cutting and flex-pipe join? Seems it's gremlin season for the Zed...

hi, just for info,
you don't need to drill them, they are studs and will hammer out of the flange.
ive just done mine. :D

You were lucky - mine needed some oxy-acetylene persuasion ;) Then 4x M10x40 stainless bolts will put it all back together (they superseded the studs on the workshop manual).

You may want to buy a pair of new gaskets too. One of mine was dead, but at £9 each, are ridiculously priced for what they are.
