Blowers

Ok I have noticed this a couple of times and just want to know if all is as it should be.

Sunny day, I get in the car for the first time, switch on, the blowers turn full on and it sounds like a tornado in the car. Now at this point the control is set to Auto and the air on is on, but there is minimal blow out of the vents. So I wait 30 secs or so and still sounds like its blowing hard but still minimal out of the vents..
So I turn the left control to the vent position ie not auto and suddenly the arctic blast arrives from the vents, I switch back to auto and all is well.

My question therefore, is if I just leave it alone will it sort itself out and start to blow out of the vents?
Is it going through some sort of initial cooling cycle before directing the air to the vents?
Has anybody else had this?
Am I doing something wrong?

Is it coming in at your feet or at the windscreen instead of the vents ? It's possible that on auto it is cooling the hottest area first, which could be either of those places. Though mine blows fully cold after only a few seconds...

My aircon is a bit weird at the moment - or rather the fan in the engine associated with it - but I shan't hijack your thread :D

Are you sure its not perhaps prioritising the footwells or screen, not that it should, but just a thought. On mine, the main front vents (on auto) will go full blast if the car is red hot and its say taking it down to 20 degrees with the air con. As the temperature gets to the right setting the fans slow down.

Hmmm
Now you mention it, I do feel it at my feet, not so much the screen, will have to check that, oh and hijack away :D

Maniac, the blowers slow as it cools the car, it's why it doesn't come straight out the vents that confuses me but as you say, it may think it needs to cool other places first. Next time I am going to leave it and see what it does on its own

:D

I think mine is ok, it's just that the fan in the engine seems to be on constantly, even after a fast drive and then sitting at lights or when I stop. Really loud. I guess it must just be the hot weather, but it was doing it a long time before we got this proper heat wave.

Bing, I haven't checked mine but, does it have a fan that is constantly running as part of the aircon system? If so that would be running all the time, infact I think my 323 ci used to do just what you said. And my wife's mini countryman does.

Yeah, if I switch off the aircon - which I do quite a lot with the top down - the fan goes off. So normal, which is good. Annoyingly loud though :x

Me thinks my airflow gets stuck sometimes in auto when I first turn on. A manual twist of the airflow selector sorts it all out. Thinking my automatic 3l is a twist and blow. :driving:
Still it has a two year bmw warranty, just have to remember to tell them :D

Just done some digging and the fault i have seems to be down to the aircon panel being faulty. Will have to book it into the garage me thinks, under warranty of course. Doh!!
