Black Z4M wheels on Black Coupe ... Fitted!!

Im undecided about the tape at the minute Tom. I have ordered some and will see what I think when it comes. I may well decide to leave it off. I was just a little concerened about there being too much black on the car and this would potentially break it up a bit. we will see though.

Regards glossing the wheels, the procedure was as follows:

1. Clean down the whole wheel with paint thinners.
2. Provide chemical metal to the damaged areas and wait for this to dry.
3. Rub down the area repaired with 80 grade wet and dry
4. Repeat stages 2 and 3 as required
5. Rub down the whole wheel with 240 grade wet and dry to take off the shine and give a key.
6. Wash down the whole wheel twice with water and washing up liquid and thoroughly rinse.
7. Allow to dry naturally
8. Provide 4no coats of grey primer, leaving 30mins between each coat
9. Leave primer to dry over night
10. Rub down primer with 1200 grade wet and dry to ensure a nice smooth surface.
11. Repeat stages 6 and 7
12. Turn on the electric heater in the garage for 30mins to get a nice warm temperature
13. Provide 4no coats of gloss black paint, leaving 30mins between each coat.
14. Leave wheels to dry and harden for a minimum of 24 hours. Mine will have been left for 5 days before I get the tyres fitted.

It should be noted that I had the paint cans sitting in a bucket of warm water for a good 30mins prior to using them and gave them a good shake for 2mins to mix the paint thoroughly.

Hope that this gives you an insight into what has been done :D

Cheers.

I have done a bit of painting before. Repainted the lower casing of the my boat engine, including filling a hole with chemical metal and that seemed to go ok! It's quite labour intensive as you say, and I'd need to chock the car up without wheels for a few days.

What colour is your interior? Would red tape look better?

Interior is phoenix yellow and anthracite; hence the reason for the yellow tape :D

Ok so last night I tried the rim tape on one of the wheels.. I can't decide whether I like it or not.

It seems very in your face but having said that I think I need to try it on the car with the tyre mounted aswell.

What's the consensus on here then??

PS.. Ignore the fact it's a bit wonky. I was just trying it roughly to see what the effect was like

I say go for it. Tape will make the wheels stand out a little more cos black on black can look a little lost. Where did you get the tape from? How much did you pay for it?

wheels & tape looks good matey, only thing it may make the rims look a bit on the small side?

Yes, this is one of my worries aswell.. I guess I will know when I put them on tomorrow :)

yeah. try them out. have you yellow calipers as well? would be a nice thought. BTW liking the original badges. I'm thinking of changing all my CF black and white ones back to blue. the blue / white looks wicked on the black wheel!

No I have gloss black calipers.. I'm not a believer in painting standard calipers a colour as they are not big enough to draw attetion to IMO. With them being black they are very inconspicuous but if you do see them they look clean and well presented :)

Yes. I thought about the black and white badges but then I would have to change every badge on the car which is quite an expensive mod for something I feel looks different but no better than the original ones. I personally like the contrast from the black paint

I think the tape maybe needs to be a couple mm further out onto the lip.
It might help to put the wheel on an old office chair base with back removed so you can rotate it easily whilst applying the tape. I've seen guys spraying wheels like this to get a nice even coat.

Thats a good idea Herminator. Thanks for the tip.. When you say a few mm further out do you mean towards the outside of the rim where the tyre will be or further in towards the centre of the rim? If its the latter then I cannot do this as due to the way the twin spokes terminate at the edge of the rim. It would reault in the tape not laying level.

I mean further towards the tyre.
It may be better to have the tyres mounted first, as I expect fitting them might mess up the tape.

Yellow strip could look good I reckon, breaking all the black up a bit.
Not seen you around Donny yet, went down to Green Lane but missed you.

I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Thank goodness its just your winter wheels,JDM...as your Cades wheels really suit your black coupe

Funny someone should mention shadow chrome,i have just had my 2nd/Original set of 108's fully refurbed in Black/shadow Chrome(putting them on soon),and looking forward to seeing what they are like :D

You have done a smashing job on painting the wheels

I personally like the yellow tape... breaks the wheels up... and stops it looking like hyou have steel wheels

I may have to copy you and get some black wheels with a red lip
