Black to red leather?

Howdy peeps,

Thinking about changing the colour of my seats from black to red. I am considering the dying route.

Will this make my car harder to sell with red seats over black? Assuming its done well.

Wow. Very brave. Not sure what shade of Red you will end up with over Black seats. :| Are you going to do the door cards too. Might be less mither sourcing a pair of nice Red leather M seats. They do come up for sale occasionally :thumbsup:
 
If that option comes up that would be nice but would red leather be less desirable if reworked or bought if it comes to the sell of the car.

I not sure how long I'll have this car because I may move because of work but at the same time I want the car to be more interesting.
 
For people looking for red , yes very desirable but for people looking for black - not so desirable.
 
So what is the most desirable colour between the two?

I don't want to limit myself if they are not very popular compared to the black but I may let my heart rule my head. I personally think red or non black seats look great. I think I am use to Alfa interiors which are more interesting.
 
I don’t think I would fancy doing the colour change.
You will be a brave man if you go that route.
 
I would have thought the exterior colour of the car would have a bearing on whether people would prefer red or black. I can't see red being too popular in a Merlot Red or blue car! Although in any shade of silver or black I'd prefer red seats myself.

Anyway if you do decide to dye them my only thought is the OE Dream Red is pretty bright. Maybe a colour more like the Imola Red my Z4 came with would work better, or perhaps the very rare Amarone? Those might also work better for dying black seats.

Here's a photo of Imola Red but I don't have one of Amarone.

Someone on one of the FB groups dyed their black seats to red. Might be worth checking with them, will be able to give hints, tips, etc. I don't think re-sale value will be affected when it comes to sell, provided as you said, the job is done properly!

Sorry you'd only get this if you were rock music fan of a certain vintage :D its a song by Deep Purple, which is the colour you would usually get mixing black and red
 
I'm old, so I got it!

The risk of purple is why I thought Imola or Amarone might be safer options if the black isn't fully covered.

Then again if you're going to dye them why not just go for something totally different? That way your car is unique and I like the idea of that!

yes I saw that too. They came out a bit lighter than planned it seemed, but the result was way better than I had expected by going black to red!
 
I see the guy on Facebook and picked his brain, he was very helpful.

I actually was sent two shades of red I was going to trail on some scrap leather before doing so.

I have a sterling silver (grey) so I think the red would look great. I think a sport cars need some loud on them.

The previous owners did this to my car. He liked red. The interior would have been black from factory. IMG-20190224-WA0004.jpeg
 
@Trav I quite like that. That wouldn't put me off. Was it dyed or retrimmed?

The scratch doctor sent me these examples to trial. You can see they leaked and the names rubbed off but I was told these were bmw stardaed colours. I am leaning towards the darker one.

I have to agree with you & Mr Tidy :thumbsup:. I'm biased of course but red does look great with sterling grey :thumbsup:. Mine are simple sport seats but I still think it looks much better than the standard black seats imo. My car originally had a black interior, according to the original spec, but the red interior on the advert sold it for me, I just love it :D . I'm fairly certain my interior has been swapped out rather than dyed though. It'll be interesting to follow your experience of doing this, certainly should be possible though. Looking forward to seeing some before, during & after pics :thumbsup:. Here's mine:

I suspect the buyer pool for black leather will be higher than for red but I don't think you will have any problems selling a white, silver, grey or black car with red leather. I for one wouldn't have black leather in a white black silver or grey car hence why I have a black car with red leather.
