Black & Orange

Also interested in know what paint you used. Did you sand down the covers before you painted? I had a bad experience with some black gloss spray paint I got from Halfords... the finish was matte and it peeled so easy so wasn't sure if it was the paint or my rubbish job painting them.

Sorry, didn't notice the last two posts! I used hycote gloss black, with a hycote primer underneath and a hycote clear lacquer to finish. I think a good even coat of lacquer is the key to making it look good. The finish isn't as perfect as it looks in the photos, but that's down to my (lack of) skill rather than the products and I doubt anyone will ever notice apart from me.

I didn't sand down before painting. This paint will definitely not come off easily, as I discovered when trying to remove attempt number 2!

I wouldn't say it's an easy job if, like me, you've got no experience of this kind of thing. It took me 3 attempts plus a new set of the hoops themselves after really cocking up the originals on the 2nd attempt. Bit of fun if you like a little project, and the worst case scenario is you have to buy new hoops at 30 quid each.

I'm now trying out some blue brace covers behind the front grill, will leave them on for a week or two before I decide whether to paint them. First impression is they look a bit too hot hatchy, but I'll see if they grow on me.

I quite like them, but then I've got red ones on my car!

I think they look ok but can't decide if they take away from the overall look. How about a photo from a little further away?

You can't really see them from further away, not in the photo I took anyway, sun on the wrong side...

Reminds me of a wrap job TLC Detailing did a couple years ago on an M4 which I thought was really nice. Great way to add some accent colour to the car.

A little visual update, I've switched the wheels for genuine BMW 788M's from an M2 Competition. I wasn't sure they were going to look "right" but I'm happy with the result.

The wheels are the same offset as the standard Z4 19's and an inch wider front and rear. If I was being picky I'd probably want the fronts to be a couple of mm further in the arches (they stick out 12.7mm further than the standard wheels) and the rear might look better if it was ever so slightly lowered.

Tyres are 235/35 & 265/30 carried over from the old wheels.

Very nice..is that a diamond cut type finish on the spokes?

If so wonder how they will last?

No rubbing?

Not entirely sure what the finish is, but they are slightly tinted in appearance so I think they must have some kind of lacquer or similar. The car they were previously on was a 2019 and I think had done around 15k miles - there's one very small mark on them but otherwise pretty much as new so I'm hopeful that's a sign they will be robust.

No rubbing at all - I'm tempted to try slightly wider tyres when it comes time to replace.

Celebrating our first car-iversary today, so I treated her to a good wash :D
