Black Grills on Grey Roadster

Marius, good effort! What did you do your rear lights with? I have a set at home and keep meaning to tint them, like the look of yours!

i've tinted the orange spots whit the black LaminX film

It does look the business. Personal opinion obviously.

The matt ones look... well too matt and stick out like a sore thumb, almost a greyer colour in the light than deep black.. I no its a mod but it doesn't look fitting, and i felt the gloss added the finish I wanted. Gloss seems to suit the car more I think, really catch the light too. Mine came with Matt grills and they really bothered me, so needed to do it right away as its a really simple mod. Did it in a Sunday afternoon and left it overnight.

All I did was remove contaminates, two coats of undercoat, then I did 3 thin coats of black gloss spray paint. All from Halfords, under a £10er the only problem is they do chip... but you cant do anything about it. When they get bad, bit of wet and dry quick bit of primer and spray again.

You have to do it thin, build up the finish dont put too much paint on them. Because of the way the grills are designed if you put too much paint on them it will run around the contours of the grill, so will leave drip marks. So take your time and build it up. You can always put paint on, but its harder to get it off.

Thanks.. that's a big help i now know my plan for weekend.. One last thing did you gloss all of the grill or just the surround where the chrome is?

Thinking of doing mine this weekend....either plastikote gloss stuff with wet and dry beforehand....

But just incase I'm not happy which ones from eBay or otherwise are ppl buying?? There's many out there...

Black grills started my modding on zed

I like the silver car as well. I have been thinking about it on mine. After seeing that I think I will.

Thanks Tom

Just got my black/Crome grills through from BMW Direct this week, they don't look great at the moment as they are a nice satin black and the lower grill is dull black. So plan is to paint a spare lower grill I have over the weekend with satin plastikote and fit that. Should look spot on then, ill get some pics up after.

I am bloody amazed you have no rubbing!! I dropped mine 40mm at the weekend i have had the arches rolled and remolded the plastic i still get very minor rubbing!!
Must be due to wheel offsets. It looks from the pictures my rears stick out a bit further than your.

It looks great very nice zed

The drivers side isn't normally that tucked, probably due to the uneven ground. Plus i'm running 255/30/19 tyres instead of the preferred 265/30/19 on a 9.5" rim.
This is the only picture i have of the rim and tyre set up on standard suspension.

Thats weird i have 9.5 rears running 255/30 R19 I don't have a stretch anything like that. Down to brand i guess? How low have you gone?

I only run the best tyres in the business  Nankang NS2000 also commonly known as the 'Ditch finder'. To be fair there not that bad but its not a tyre i'd want on an M though, they can give you moments where your arse twitches like a rabbit's nose.
I've removed the adjuster for the rear so the rear is as low as it will go.

I had a those on the back they where twitchy!! Although the old guy at my local tyre place says there a good tyre? I have Falkens so a long way from expensiveness ones!!

Intending to do this later today, anyone got a suggestion for a good primer? Intending to use the plastikote from b&q recommended for the main paint
