Black box by 2020

Heard this on the radio this morning.

Does make me wonder if I will still want to drive for leisure by then. Either that or get an old Mk1 MX5 so I can't get in so much trouble so easily.

New BMW s have got the SOS button , which when pressed goes straight through to emergency services . If there is no answer when they return the call they know the location of the vehicle & will come out to you. No phone is needed in the vehicle for this to operate. Bit scary what technology is built in now .

So i've been told, quite a lot of mainly German cars also dump the last few seconds of telemetry onto said boxes prior to a crash!

Well for a weekend car, limited to driving it say friday - sunday and without a blackbox, one hopes the premium could be affordable?

The difference is that the SOS button gives them your exact co-ordinates where as BMW Assist when the call is made they ask you where you are. Sometimes you might not know or in other cases like the time I was hit, I knew where I was but the guy on the end of the phone had not a clue of where I was. The co-ordinates are passed through for where you pressed the button as the SOS button can also be used to report an accident you've maybe witness or passed on the other side of the road.

However the SOS button is an optional extra and is not a standard piece of kit.

Also the SOS button is to emergency services, not BMW assist according to the official BMW video I watched on it. It's hardly an SOS if they can't answer the phone. That's like phoning for an ambulance and them not having staff to answer the phone. Emergency calls are always answered.

I think they know where you are as the car has a GPS.

It also says on the BMW website that your position is "Automatically" sent to the emergency services, but not sure if it's routed through a person automatically., not that it makes any sense if it is.
