I started a thread about this damage.I think it could be water drops and sunlight my self. The area is totally smooth to the touch.Sure these appeared before volcano..Not 100% sure though lol
This is close up with decent camera size is approx 5mm accross. There are 40+ of these on bonnet and boot. They will not polish out. It ia an 04 model with black metallic paint.

Try posting on detailingworld.co.uk, there are some fantastic people on there.

Looks like the bird crap damage I got to my wife's car, except that the damage was on top and could be polished out (AutoGlym paint renovator - normal polish just wasn't abrasive enough).

I've hear people say before that bird crap can do this though - blister the paint underneath - don't get how that heppens though, surely it would start to damamge from the top down?!

If the damage is actually underneath the laquer, then I would be suprised if the only option isn't a respray.

yes its so smooth to the touch I can only see paint being damaged underneath laquer...A real bum!! it only shows up when really cleaned up . Perhaps a respray when I can afford it

Thats absolutely looks like bird s**t damage to me. :x

40 patches of bird damage? Sounds like a bird with the runs then ...

yes it not bird crap .I have only had to clear 1 up off roof.Must be water with sun effect or something similar.
