Biycle carrier

Hi,

I'm more of a lurker here, I'm in the progress of ordering a Z4 (test drive saturday). One of the hurdles I had was to carry a bicycle with the car. Surfing around the web I found two solutions: birdautomative and paulchen.

BUT after speaking with the dealer I was supprised, BMW offers a complete new system for carrying bicycles, the Z4 E89 is the first one to get the possibility. I consist of some fixed pieces underneath the trunk and a removable carrier, almost the same system as you get with a towball (or hitch) mounted carrier, but with this construction you can't tow anything and doesn't need approval of the different governments which is the problem with a towing hook.

So at least in Belgium, Europe there is a solution, it's not cheap: 1300 euro, but as I understood it's also possible for some other constructions to carry other stuff like skis.

When I order and it's installed I'll post pictures of it

Welcome along :)

I spotted a 1-Series convertible at my local MTB trail centre at the weekend, with an interesting rear rack fitted. There were two inserts removed from the bumper, level with the number plate recess, each about 40mm square. The bike rack supports appeared to sit through these and attach onto some part of the car behind the bumper. Very smart solution IMO. I guess the E80 Z4 one will be a similar idea. Not cheap at 1300 euro but if it allows you to safely carry bikes on a car of your choice then perhaps worth it!

I saw this at the dealer too on a X5, but the new system is totally invisible when not in used

I scanned the productinformation I've gotten from the dealer, it's in Dutch but you can see what it contains

That looks like a superb option - thanks for posting. Still doen't make me want an E89 though!

Looks like the original crash bar behind the bumper is replaced with the one in your second picture, with the attachment being located under the bottom of the bumper. Then the rack bolts onto this when required. Neat solution.
