Bit sad this morning :-(

Sorry to hear of wee Bings loss.

As for a replacement. Get a dog, they live longer, bring so much joy that it completely outweighs the pain when they eventually leave.

although a dog is a fantastic companion i would not have another now, too tying

Thanks guys... Floodgates just opened, he was trying to avoid getting upset

Better out than in though...

Sorry to hear that mate......if its any consolation if got 4 (formerly 5) of these little bastards who have cost us over 5 grand over 4 years including all the clobber you need.

I asked the vet to add up all the bills - £850 of which 1 wasa responsible for £450....that one is currently being hand fed mushed up food through a little pipette thing because she's had most of her teeth out!

5 grand! :o

My daughters were given a rescue hamster from a colleague of mine 12 months ago, he is a huge bugger and apparently 3 years old. About 6 months ago he had a stroke and is partially paralysed down one side. That cost me £30 at the vets. Then 2 months ago got a call from the wife saying he wasnt well so she took him to the vets. Vet said it didn't look hopeful but they put him on a heat mat and antibiotics. Hour later get a call to come and pick him up (another £30). When collected from vet apparently she (Australian) said "I though he was smoke when you bought him in".

So all in all this free hamster has cost me £60 in Vets bills and the bugger is still alive.

Thanks guys

Flo is now buried in her house under a rose, WB fine.

Sad day for wee Bing :| - special treat is the order of the day, me thinks :D

Possibly... Not another hamster though. On the plus side, the grass had to be cut first, so at least that's out the way :D

If you don't want to deal with pets dying, get a parrot. A large macaw will outlive you, and possibly your child. Not to say it wouldn't still run up a bunch of vet bills. Certainly not the same as a cuddly mammal, but they can be very entertaining characters.

As painful as it is, children learning to deal with death is a good thing. We all die eventually. Learning to cope with these losses is part of becoming a well balanced human. Better to learn about death from a small pet than learning due to the loss of a mate to an accident.

Just checking on yr son, is he feeling better now?

Thanks Jembo - he's fine now. I miss the wee bugger more than him I think tbh

We have not had any discussions about new pets yet either

How did I miss this?

Sorry to hear that Allan. Part of growing up eh? Hope wee Bing is ok

Thanks Adam - he's fine now, but the worst bit of the whole experience was when he finally succumbed to seeing her, and whilst sitting next to me holding her his tears started falling on my leg. Makes me well up just thinking about it - horrible seeing your child emotionally pained

She's got a nice spot though :
