Bit of advice??

Hello, I'm thinking of getting myself a Z4M and was just after some feedback and advice.

At the minute I drive a VX220 so the Z4 should be a nice step up in comfort etc. but I'm wondering how big a step up it will be in running costs??

Also is there anything to look out for when viewing one? Common faults etc??

And lastly what are the best places in the north west for performance mods on these cars? I've spent a long time getting the vx just right so I'll probably want to make a few tweaks on this as well once I get it, and I wouldn't mind doing a bit of pricing up before I buy one.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I had a VX220 Turbo and now have a M coupe. I think you will find the Z feels heavier and less connected to the thrill factor than your current VX and if you have the turbo feels a little less 'explosive' in speed although some of that is due to the noise and sheer thrill of the VX. I changed because I got fed up with the noise in the VX and relative discomfort. A trip to Monaco sealed it when it was 35deg and then rained. Put the hood up and then spent an hour driving in what was essentially a sauna.

The M is faster once you're into 3 figure speeds and faster all round if you have a n/a VX. It is very comfortable and I wouldn't go back. Spent a bit of time last month in an Elise and immediately remembered why I changed and don't regret it for a second.

Have tracked both and the VX feels a little more progressive and less in your face than the M but the M bristles with power and you feel that difference. There is something nice about a big engine and it feels bigger and sounds better than the VX. Try a test dive and see what you think.

The running costs are undoubtedly higher. It is essentially Vauxhall against BMW.
 
i love the vx220's i always wanted one but they somehow passed me by....

the z4m, is a fabulous car, ive owned mine since taking delivery when it was new in 2007, heres my ownership experience, i find the servicing expensive, if you adhere to the servicing as bmw say with the recommended coolant, brake fluid changes not to mention the actual services its an expensive car to maintain BUT...... i never hit the mileage marker so im doing it every 2 years which makes things alot more cost effective, mine is a second vehicle and it very much feels a "weekend car" i wouldnt want to use it everyday at all.
over the last few years ive grown very attached to my car, as i usually swap and change like no-ones business, so for me to have kept it from new is a big big statement.

Quite frankly its awesome, they are absolutly fabulous on the track, everythink about the car screams, one of the last proper Ms, down to the proper hydraulic steering, the proper variable ///M locking diff, add a nice set of alloys to change the lack lustre stock items (imo) and these cars look fabulous, in my time of owning my ///M ive seen about 5 on the road in a total of nearly 4 years, so they're rare.
The s54 is imo one of the very very best engines, the sound, the power 7900 redline, its a proper old school mecanical motor, when you think theese cars make 338bhp, yet a Brand new 1 M coupe makes 340bhp, the s54 is the most amazing part of the car it even looks good.

the z4m is like a german TVR, a proper brute of a car, but with refinement, those amazing looks, quite simply its the best car ive ever owned. performance parts are now becoming popular for this car with some proper mods, everything from suspension to proper engine upgrades, with a few choice mods you can make a car thats bang upto date and will literally embarress much more expensive machinery... somethink i do reguarly ;-)
 
Well hopefully I'll be sorting a test drive or two this week, so I should be able to make my mind up then!

Then it's just a case if working out all the sums ;)

It's either this or an exige, so I really just need to decide what type of car I'm after.
