Bit of a storm......

Out with Mrs J today in the Jeep driving between northern UAE (Ras al Khaima) to Sharjah along the coast. Nice and sunny and about 24 deg. Looking out towards the sea- a huge storm out to sea - SO WE THOUGHT, and it is very black, lightning in the clouds and quite spectacular. Then we realise this storm is moving towards us at quite a rate. First light rain and medium winds and then the nightmare begins. The rain increases and the winds start to pick up the loose sand, rain drops now the size of golf balls (fortunately not frozen as this does happen - a bugger on your bodywork!). Visibility quickly reduces to about zero in a combination of sand and rain. The Jeep is being physically moved acroos the road even when down to 30km/h.

Manage to find a bridge and with 6 other motorists get sufficent shelter as the wind speed increases to something which must, at a guess have been 50-60mph plus. Last for about 10 mins and the road starts to flood under the bridge and quickly to about 2 feet in depth. Thank goodness for Jeep and the ride height.

As the visibility starts to clear we slowly move from under the bridge to find total carnage in the surrounding area - lamposts across the road, all sorts of road furniture (signs etc) broken and across the road which is now flooding and getting deeper. 5 cars in a road adjacent to the main road are now floating in a sea of sand mud and water. Keep speed down to 20km/h through the flood water which gradually clears as we move away from the eye of the storm. Looking back we can see the storm as it moves west across the desert. 40 km further up the road - sun, sea and sand as if nothing has happened. Storm Chasers - barking mad if you ask me...!

My wife is on her way to Muscat as I type, I know its further down but I hope she doesn't get any surprises. She was rattling on about a bit of unrest down there at the moment as well (not weather-related!), have you heard anything? Sad to see even Jordan is getting a bit unruly at the moment too, I was hoping for a return trip some time soon...... :(

Lots of cops about in Abu Dhabi after the Tunis nonsense but then a large Tunisian contingent live there. Surprised to hear about Muscat - visit there regularly and seemed all OK just after Christmas but then a lots happened in the Arab world since then. If she finds any difficulty or problems getting out (highly unlikely) then we (that’s Mrs J and me) can always collect here and bring her to my place in Sharjah and exit through Dubai. Not likely to happen but if it does....

WOW...good that you were not hurt....
Did you get any pictures... :P

Camera in the back of the Jeep and the rain was so heavy and wind too strong to risk getting out. Had my iPhone in the front but we were both somewaht concerned as the road started to flood that we forgot - well Mrs J blames me that I forgot as the first thing we said when it was all over was, ' Bugger no pictures...' and then I remembered my phone. Such is life.

AlanJ, I did not really think that you got pictures as that is the last thing you think about when the situation is really serious.

Bloody hell, that sounded like a scene from The Day After Tomorrow. Glad you and the missus are both okay and were in full Jeep mode AlanJ

Much obliged Alan, makes me feel a lot better

..especially after the time before last when she bawled out a security official at Cairo airport who wouldn't let her through to the check-in desk in because she didn't have a boarding pass :!: and started on her "how can you treat women like this" soapbox routine...still the joys of being married to a feisty redhead eh!
