Just been past this dealer today on the train into New Street and was disappointed but not surprised to see a car washing machine (the sort you normally see at filling stations with the revolving brushes) cleaning one of the cars. I'd check for swirls if you buy a car from them or have your car washed by them after a service!!

I went to look at a new VW Toureg from a different VW dealership - Brand New in the showroom covered in Swirls :headbang:

:o Not good at all  It could however be that perhaps VW's paint doesn't suffer from swirls

Were the swirls an optional extra by any chance to which the dealer could charge you for

Thing is the majority of joe public dont know that swirls on paintwork is "bad" hence the dealers can get away with presenting brand new cars in this way. On the flip side - if most people are not "aware! then these same people wouldnt appriciate the difference between amazing flawless swirlfree paintjob - therefore the reduction in margin by doing this work to the dealer would be a waste....

its the awareness of detailing brought about by forums such as here and DW which has meant the detailing business had rocketed and people now and having brand new cars driven straight to a detailer before its even hit the roads properly

I think that you have summed it up correctly, however why would anyone expect scratches to be acceptable on new paintwork beats me. I bet if they had new doudle glazing installed and they noticed all their newly installed glass panels were covered in scratch swirls, then they would be wanting the glass replaced.

Ah - you say that, I had my windows replaced last year and according to the documentation and warranty, scratches on the glass are not a warranty issue.

I begged to differ and had a unit replaced as it had scratches similar to car paint from a car wash. Was a battle though as the attitude was very much like "you can still see through it" ...

Been there on a new house - we had a significant snagging list imcluding 25% of the window panes changed out.

I think new house building is a good analogy - I believe a lot of poor finish in modern houses is due to building firms working on the basis that people are either too busy with modern life or Simply don't notice or don't know it shouldn't be like that.

On the car wash front my heart drops every time I go into a city centre car park with a wash and valet and there's a Range Rover Vogue being washed and you see the state of the mitt.
