Bilstein B6 and stock washer?

Has anyone here assembled a B6 front strut? There is a washer ("support") that looks to actually go on top of the bump stop on the stock setup. Since the bump stop is internal on B6, is it necessary? #6 in this diagram although I believe it actually sits just above the bump stop when you look at the original strut assembly. I suppose you may still need it to prevent the shaft from going through the mount but just wanted to confirm as it can move around a little bit without a bump stop below it.
