Hi all, wasn't sure where to post this.
Girl in my office is looking to to put bigger wheels on her car going from 15" upto 17" However she is now having second thoughts as someone told her that she has to declare this to her insurance company as a Mod and this will subsequently increase the cost of her insurance.
Ihave seen this somewhere on the forum but can't remeber where.
Anyone shed any light on this for her.
:D

Any change to a car, especially wheels, will affect the insurance. The actual increase will depend on the company, but it is a notifiable change.

pvr is correct.

Where it gets interesting is where bigger wheels are fitted as a factory option by the original owner, which someone subsequently buying that car second-hand might not know about. My mate bought a MINI Cooper and the insurance company wanted to know the exact spec which the car left the factory with, which he was able to supply after getting a printout from a dealership.

I've told my insurance company that my 3.0i Z4 has 18" alloys, despite them being a factory option over the standard 17"s.

If they are factory fit or your fitting bigger wheels designed for the vehicle by the manufacturer most insurance companies wouldn't care. But, put 17" wheels on a standard old Nova and they might think differently!

Thanks Guys, I kinda guessed that it would affect insurance but wasn't 100%, any ideas on a ball park amount as to how much of an increase would be applied i.e £10 £50 £100 a year? Obviously appreciate that there will be variables involved but was wondering if anyone had recieved an increase since doing this. just looking for a Guesstimate.

Too dependent on the company. Adding aeroskirts to my M would almost double the premium ... go figure.

Double it just for adding Aero skirts :x

Unfair man, thats just robbery. :x

Phone and askm, depends on the company. Some companies like Greenlight dont charge anything for alot of the "normal" mods.

Mine went up £20 when I dropped from 18" 108s to 17" wheels
Any change is an excuse to increase premium
I wonder how folks manage their insurance company with all the mods they do to their cars
I am with Directline

i used swiftcover recently, and they stated that any upgraded alloys will be covered upto £1000 only. otherwise no increase in premium.

I can understand some mods meaning an increase in premiums, but aero skirts :?

Thing is if you did put the aeros on and not tell them would they ever know?

Some insurers are just odd when it comes to pricing. Plenty are not though, and are good for coverage still, so well worth swapping to them if you want.

I think even Aviva I used last year would cover up to 3 mods without incurring costs as long as they didn't alter engine performance, so clearly they realise most people do small mods and it's best to let them declare them and be honest than not know!
