BIG PROBLEM!

...Got a problem guys... :(

Since owning my 2003 3.0 SE she's run perfectly. Besides some lower rpm hesitation which was solved completely with the ignition on/off 10 sec trick to re-set. She’s run perfect. Parked up the car Sunday night after using it all weekend. As many of you around the SE London/Kent area migth know it raining really heavy all day on monday.Come Monday night, I had to pop to the shops, Get in the car turn ignition..wait for a few secs then start...Car barley rumbles into life ..Spluttering at 300rpm .. then settling at a nice idle 500-1500rpm...just going up and down up and down, as if I was pressing the throttle but not doing it smoothly...no…spluttering and popping ..shaking all over the place. Jumping on the throttle does nothing besides make the car spluttering/pop/backfire Even more.. :( :( :(

The car is actually in a undriveable state,Anyhows aswell as this the there’s a few lights on dash lit up, The Yellow pipe one (engine management?) EML?Traction control (wtf?) and also one in the middle Like a yellow warning sign kinda like (!) (but with a circle in there) in yellow :( .There’s never been any problem like this with the car.

Sunday night i didn't bother putting my BMW cover on the car due it being dirty and not having time to wash it. Could the heavy rain have got in somewhere? Quick inspection under the bonnet and boot, Nothing look’s overly wet?, I’m convinced it's nothing mechanical due to the fact using the car all day Sunday and under 24's later starting it to instantly have problems? After the heavy rain me suspects something electrical?

Only other problem on the car that could relate that i've had over the last 2-3 weeks is the headligths,I've fitted HID's and they've worked perfectly and looked awsome,Only problem is that driver's side headlamp cover (in front of the wheel) was missing ..upon fitting the HID the drivers side headlamp has become worse and worse with condensation, Almost to the point its as the inside of a shower, Never got round to drying it out and getting a new cover,But recently I had the headlamp warning light after driving 20-30 mins +..Got outside to check the headlamps..and it's the opposite lamp that's off? Not the condensated one?strange,Turn the lights on a off a few times it normally pops back into life. Maybe this electrical problem is related? Maybe shorting something out? Dunno? :( :(

Any help/Advise would be great guys…Just got a £150 worth of cleaning products for this morning as well as my Z4M alloys to fit, and this happens :x

Sounds like the coil packs are either going or gone on some cylinders.
Doubt its the rain - perhaps just coinsidence.

Check out this thread: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13962&view=next

Coils looks like this: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=127687 and are easy to replace, but you need to have the issue diagnosed with an Autologic box. Not sure who (aside from dealer) has this in your area.

Not sure about the headlamp issue

Id first start off by removing all the coilpacks and re-inserting them *a few times* to see if it fixes it. Check their condition (corrosion?) and apply a di-electric grease if you have one.

It definitely sounds like it could be a coil problem. A lot of the time in cold/damp conditions, the condensation on the electrodes causes some corrosion which can cause misfire problems so this will help check the continuity.

If not, im afraid there are many other things this could be and the best way to find out it to have the codes read off! Where abouts do you live?

My uncle was saying this aswell..His have gone a few times on his car.But to just go over nigth? But the condensation comment makes sense.I really hope it's this guys...

Will check when i get home tonigth?problem is if one's gone how will i know? I presume..removing then one by one it will run worse until i find the faulty one?And i presume it will run no better?

Yep, youve got it  Visually check the connectors for water and corrosion. If there is corrosion, some metal polish should do the trick to clean it up and protect it with a di-electric grease.

If it sounds like only one or two cylinders are at fault (in your carse it does). If the coils do not provide any useful resolution, i'd have a look at your spark plugs while youre in there :) Check for images online of what a correctly burning spark plug should look like, they should all be the same colour. (Lightish Brown = Good. Black Dry = Rich, White bits = Lean, Black Wet = Oil if i remember correctly!)

Cool i'll check them out...If anything's gone i'll guess it will be a good excuse to upgrade some stuff! :P

Looking more on the forums I see theres 1-2 other people with this very silimar problem recently on the forums...

Z4's don't like the cold wet conditon's it seems.

Yeh i know i bit about spark plug colours from playing around with jetting on my 2 stroke bikes and jetting them.

Thanks Alot for the Help dude's!

Hey guys got a chance to look at the car today.. unpluged a few of the coil packs to start with just at the to connect (is this ok ?.) didn't notice any differnce ? untill i got down untill unpluggin down t'll 2 left lol...seemed as bad with one or 2 ? umm..upon further investigation checked the sparks and they all look the bloddy same colour ? lol all very sutty and black ?

heres some pics

Check the link to see ... :(

No sign of any moisture... ?

Kinda stumped.. :( migth just take it to mechanics...if can get it there

Doesn't seem to be coil packs at all?!?!

Got the call to my local decent mechanics in Bexleyheath Sanspeed..There fairly well known around here.

Anyhows dropped it off sunday..Gave them a call this morning. They told me that the throttle module/regualtor was gone/not working properly...Strange...?Iasked why this would cause the car to splutter and bang and pop and what i sounds like its running on deffo less that the full 6 Cyclinders?.He also asked me if the battery went flat...which i replyed no? Do throttle modules just go while a car is parking up?

very strange..

Anyone ever heard of this?

I had a very similar problem myself Feb last year. I washed the car and then foolishly didn't then use the car for a week because I went away on holiday. Subsequently I tried starting it and it was very diffcult to get going, barely turning over and spluttering etc. Once I had actually got it running on it took several minutes to warm up and tick-over properly. Initially the car sounded awful and I had all the warning lights on. I guess some damp must have got into the electrics somewhere and caused problems.

So you jsut let it run and it fixed itself?

Yep, although I think it stored a fault in the car electronics which tripped out the aircon until it was cleared.

Just got a call back from sanspeed after spending a hole day on the car..(been trying to call them but could never get hold of the mechanic)..

They told me the car was indeed running on 2 Cylinders...And they cleared the throttle regulator/housing faults codes...it runs fine for a couple hours then starts again?..And there saying replacing it is the way to go, Part is needed from BMW will cost £280 with fitting and £65 diagnosis ... I finally got to speak to someone while they where telling me this and told the women i'd been trying to mention the car didn't actually break down..It was running fine ..perfectly..parked up, rained very heavy..next day it ran like this? Can a throttle housing go while parked up? From perfect? She didn't seem to sure and would mention it to them mechanics..

Any advise on these guys? never heard of this part going before??

Any advise would be great.

Ive heard of Electronic TB's just randomly packing in so it could be that (either the motor or position sensor). Many motorised units like that are more likely to seize whilst being stood rather than in operation. The TB being in the wrong position could be the reason all your spark plugs are coked up (too little air).

Here shows that the TB itself is $362.72:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=BT52&mospid=47797&btnr=13_0901&hg=13&fg=15

To save yourself £100+ you could get one from a scrappy/ebay, but you'd be without a car for a while...

So if they really are replacing the TB, its a reasonable-ish price. End of the day, they read off the codes and it leads to this. If this doesnt fix the problem, dont let them make you pay for it. :)

Well it's £280 fitted but i've gotta pay for diagnosis aswell..
Does't this sound geuine then? car driven all weekend..parked up for under 24hrs...TB completly gone? car running on 2 cyclinders? If it is i'll give them the go ahead...

Just never really had a problem like this for a perfect running car ...just serviced by BMW under 400 miles ago... to be parked up ..and the from nothing ..to barly runing while parked?

umm

Just an update..

Picking the car up today as it is finished... :D :D actualy missed it :(

They offered me a free software update from BMW for the throttle bodies when i dropped my oil off on monday,I said sure..When i called to collect the car today they mentioned it and said yeh we can do it for £60 more...There's me thinking it was just somthing they was going to do since they was going too replace the thorttle bodies anyhow? LOl.. is it worth getting or should I just leave it?

Software update!? I wouldnt bother, sounds like theyre trying to fleece you for more of your hard earned £'s

Id say no...

Yeah i told them to forget the software update ...

Got my diff and gearbox oil changed while is was in since i had them sitting around..And they only wanted another £37.Used the best products of coure..Redline for the gearbox and castrol for the diff..
The gearbox feels exactly the same ? Does it take any time for the differnce to be felt ? Still notchy from cold into first/reverse until warm. But i've only done 6-8 miles in it.figured the differnce should be instant?
