Big Healey

Just watched a 1960 Austin-Healey 3000 MK1 BN7 sell for 60K in California on BAT. A beautiful orange and white example.
Delivery is to Belgium :o I'm jealous :(

A mate of mine dabbles in classics and had a MK3 Healey 3000 five or so years ago in two-tone metallic Ice Blue metallic Old English White that looked stunning.

I had a quick drive in it and loved it, but even then they were worth over £30K. :o

He has a modified MGA with factory hardtop and a manual with O/D S-Type Jaguar 3.8 at the moment, and keeps telling me I should buy a classic (meaning one of his obviously).

But I'd much rather drive my M Coupe. :D

I agree with you ....... which is why I have the Zed  However, for nostalgia and BR heritage... I take that A with 3.8 Jag motor in a heartbeat under 30k if the wife wouldn't make me sleep in it for the rest of my life :(

Oops, some misunderstanding going on here! :?

The MGA has an over-bored MGB engine with 1,850cc, a Ford 5 speed gearbox and a few other mods to make it more drivable in modern traffic.

The Jag motor is fitted to a mid-60s Jaguar S-Type saloon - a proper get-away car for when you did a bank job in the late 60s or early 70s (sorry if that is a bit too English)!

I got talking to a guy at a car show in Southport a few years ago that had restored this beautiful 1966 3000 MkIII back in 2007. Apart from the paint he did all the work himself

That is stunning - just like the one my mate had.

A bit of a beast to drive, but it sounded fantastic.

But then it would with a straight 6 - as most Z4 owners will appreciate!

A stunningly beautiful car!
I had a ride in one many years ago (identical colours) while it was still undergoing restoration - it had a cover missing from the propshaft tunnel and I still remember the fella telling me not to touch the rotating propshaft and U/J - As if I needed telling?

One of my MGAs has a V6, 200 bhp and a special coupe body. And much better handling than a Healey, which I agree has always looked wonderful, but has to deal with a lump of an engine.

These old classic cars are attractive ... But when you get in them and drive, I bet you yearn for your Zed pretty quick. :D You get aditional zoom zoom and all the ooh ahh comfy too.

The blue over white on a later 3000 is superb but personally I prefer the single colour schemes of the earlier 100/100S/100M/100-6 models....BRG with the windscreen raked back is just fabulous! When it comes to colour combinations though there cannot be many cars with the variation found on Big Healeys

Agree that I like the original 100 the best as far as style is concerned. They were also reasonably quick in a straight line despite the prewar inspired big thumper of an engine, but the brakes were pitiful. The handful of 100S cars proved what they could have done with good brakes.

The one thing with the Straight Six’s of yesterday year ie Healey TR6 etc is the sound, non of the modern six’s come close.

Some of the vintage straight 6s were very good sounding - a Jaguar in full cry and one of the best I ever heard, a fairly rare Alfa 2600 at red line.

But I have to differ with you about the Healey and Triumph sixes - IMHO an S52 engine at speed sounds even better,, given either a free flow exhaust or a race system. My MGC, which would set off car alarms in an underground garage when firing up (essentially the same as a Healey engine) was fine, but the BMW sounds far better.

As much as I like the sound of straight 6 Jaguars, Healeys, TRs, etc. I really liked the sound of the N52 in my last coupe with a custom cat-back exhaust. :)

But I'd take my current S54 with Power Flow back boxes ahead of any of them!

Excellent thread this, I just love the best of British sports cars!
Sorry but you have to agree that you cannot beat the sleek beautiful looks and power of these beasts!
