BeWiser Insurance Brokers - Steer Well Clear

What an outfit these Brokers are..

I recently bought the Alpina so phoned my Insurance Brokers on 19 Jan, for a revised quote. Originally paying £280pa for the 2.5SE, they came back saying that the current company (Ageas) wouldn't insure me on the Alpina, but they had got me an alternative quote through Aviva for £658pa !

At that point I had both cars, but the Alpina was still off-road, so I said "OK, leave it for now, I'll phone around". I did and got a quote through Adrian Flux for £340p.a.

I sold the 2.5SE a week later on the Sunday and called Bewiser next day on Monday 26th Jan to cancel the original Policy. This is where the games start...
Insurer: Can I ask why you are cancelling ?
Me: Because Ive sold the car and bought another.
Insurer: Can we quote you on the new car ?
Me: You have, at £658 which is way more than I found elsewhere.
Insurer: What have you been quoted?
Me: Why, what is your best price ? (not being prepared to tell them my best quote)
Insurer: We've a note on file to say we could do it for £430
Me: Why wasn't I told/quoted that ?
Insurer: We rang the insurance company back and told them that you've been driving a Z4 before, so they reduced it.
Me: a) You knew that in the first place, when obtaining quotes b) Why did nobody call me to tell me. Anyway thats still £90 dearer than Ive got elsewhere.

Insurer: OK, well we can cancel your policy halfway through and your refund will be... £42 after we've deducted our £25 penalty fee.
Me: Hang-on, I paid £280 up-front, you cancel 6 months in and I get £42 back ??
Insurer: That's our Terms and Conditions, you cancelled and went elsewhere through your choice...
Me: No, you mis-quoted me. I gave you the opportunity to re-quote using the information you held on-file and you misquoted by over £200 and now you are going to penalise me for going elsewhere ? Had I accepted £658, would you have called me back with a £228 refund ? I doubt it very much !

I then advised them that the car was sold and should come off cover, but not to cancel the policy with a £42 refund until I could speak to a Manager. A week or so went by of me trying to speak to the Customer Service Manager, waiting for calls back, chasing again, etc. After more phone calls, they now want to cancel the Policy from the 10th Feb, which I've disputed, and sent in a copy of the sale receipt dated 25Jan (as they requested) and they will still now only cancel from 10th Feb, reducing the £42 even more !

They also are telling me to allow upto 60 days for my refund as they will not pay it until the Insurers refund them !

I have phoned them 4 times in the last week asking to speak to Jenna, the Customer Service Manager, but she will not speak to me or return my calls. I asked for her e-mail address and they will not give it me ! The Head of Complaints (Dawn Givor) will not speak to the public as she only speaks to her internal Managers apparently !

The lesson I have learned here is never to pay the insurance up-front, as if I'd paid installments, I would have stopped them, giving me the upper hand whilst they chased me.

They have my money and they have now written to me advising the Policy is cancelled from 10th Feb and to wait 60 days for refund. (They know I have no power, other than bad publicity I which have threatened if they didnt call me back today !)

Have I got the time and energy to go to the Financial Ombudsman for approx £100 ? Probably not, but the principle of the thing and how little they are bothered really gets me

I suppose the clue was in the title...Be Wiser..

Anyone else had dealings with them ?

Or at least threaten them that you will
Shocking treatment :(

Cheers chaps,
I'll see how much support and what comments I get here, before going to the Ombudsman, but i'm looking forward to sending them the link...

May also put on the Alpina, BMW5 and A few other forums plus their own Facebook page yet, until they conceed ! :D

What an absolute joke. Oh and btw if you do make an ombudsman complaint, it'll cost them £500 anyway so making a complaint to them and indicating that if not resolved to your satisfaction that you will take that action may well entice them.

As Angie says, it's not a lot of effort to go to the ombudsman - a letter to the insurers with your expected outcome (a pro rata refund minus admin costs seems fair). If they don't resolve this, after 8 weeks, another letter to the ombudsman which as pointed out will cost them £500.

I suspect they will give you your refund - no point getting stressed, you hold the cards here!

Good luck and let us know how you get on!

Playing devils advocate, did you read the T&C's when you took the policy out. Insurance companies always have break points of how much they refund at what time. So not sure you can get them on that. Maybe on the other issue though.

.

Not at the time , no I didnt and having done so now there are short term rates and penalties mentioned. I'm not arguing with that. However I worked in Motor Insurance for some time 20 years ago and if the Insurer declines to continue cover, (as in this case, due to the vehicle type) a pro-rata refund is normally given. If Ageas had quoted me, fair enough, but they declined the opportunity.

My main gripe is that BeWiser as a broker quoted £658 with Aviva, which when I declined was then reduced to £430 (still with Aviva) , by which time I had already purchased alternative cover elsewhere. Had I declined the £430 at the outset, BeWiser would have more of a case I feel.

I appreciate all your comments though guys. Your feedback is all useful

Ah yes, forgot the initial insurer declined to quote, was thinking they were trying to shaft you. On that basis I would say it should be pro rata as you say.

That really sucks. Why do insurance (and other big firms) carry out this practice? My quote for a VW was reduced by £25 when I said I could get it cheaper elsewhere. It really gets up my goat when they think they can rip us off.

But this is a shocking story. What would they do if you were paying monthly? Take em to the ombudsman.

I was insured with LV= but when I got #320 they said that they wouldn't be able to offer cover - nothing to do with me, they just didn't offer cover on the vehicle - so, as it was their decision, they refunded pro-rata without any admin fees etc.

I had a similar outcome to Perry. The strange thing is that I was with Aviva & wanted to stay with them but they flatly told me that they would not insure an Alpina. They gave the correct refund & I moved to Direct LIne & now A Plan.
Threaten them with the ombudsman & bad publicity they deserve it.

Had similar issues with Adrian Flux.

To be honest im of the opinion the most insurance companies are just legalised crooks. They will basically just do as they please as joe public don't have the time or resource to do anything about it.

I have had problems with them too, but I am a network connection of the chairman so it got sorted so quickly it was almost embarrassing.

:D

Ironically, after emailing the 'Admin' Dept at 9:30 this morning with a link to this thread, I got a call back within 2 hours from the elusive Jenna. BeWiser now advise me that the Insurer wants proof of sale/transfer from DVLA in order to consider back dating the cancellation to 25 Jan !

Ive rung DVLA who advise I need to fill out a V888 form, send two forms of ID and £5 cheque.. I will be asking if BeWiser are now also prepared to cover this extra cost (not to mention the hassle!)

Chairman of BeWiser or one of the other Companies Nelly Welly ? - If it is BeWiser, please bring this thread to his attention... :D

As above, go to Ombudsman. Add your own admin fee to the bill, to counter theirs. You may be surprised, when confronted with a black mark and £500 costs then refunding the full amount may be the best outcome.

Yes, I am getting more tempted to go to the Ombudsman as this progresses.

I cant beleive that to cancel a policy, they want me to obtain confirmation from DVLA at a financial cost and another 2 weeks delay in doing so. Especially when they have a recorded phone conversation on 26/1 when I advised them the vehcile was sold. Isnt that the sufficient proof that most insurance companies accept ?

They should be able to check the Insurance database and find an alternative policy taken out on 25/1 by the new owner anyway !

Talk about "out of the frying pan, into the fire"

Flux are past masters at stitching you up if you cancel mid term. I got £40 back, 2 months into a 1 year policy on my LR 50th. The years premium was £265. I've never touched them since and that will remain so till I give up driving.

Cheers Denis,
Time to exit at Renewal by the sound of it then ! :headbang:
