Best ways to reduce weight

I'm not sure if this question has already been asked, but what are the best ways in a Z4 3.0i to reduce weight?

was thinking air con delete? Anyone done? I never use the air on in any of my cars in fact I've never really used air con in any car I've ever owned.

Not really worried about resale as the Z is my daily runner and is honestly one of the best cars I've had in terms of enjoyment, looks and driver pleasure and have no reason to sell.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Aircon compressor, heat exchanger, and pipework is 9.2kg.
If you're taking out the passenger seat (28kg) then the passenger airbag and mounting bracket is another 4kg
Replacing the battery for a Lithium item is 17-18kg

Just guessing but assuming you have an electric driver's seat with memory swapping it for a manual one ought to save some weight.

That wouldn't work for me!

Rob will know as I've met him - if I lost that I wouldn't cast a shadow.

I got rid of 16kg from mine simply by taking up regular hill walking.

Unfortunately having under 20% body fat I can't really loose any more weight in that department :D

17-18kg from a battery change! really ?? Thats great!

I'd suggest the battery weight contributes to the f/r weight balance of the car. Tipping it for a lighter one might upset that balance a bit.

You will need to be jump started after fitting the laptop battery though :P

Are you going to track it? Why do you want to save weight?

If you do relatively short journeys, don’t fill it with fuel... 1ltr of petrol weighs approx 720gms.

Going for the lightest wheel/tyre combination will make a significant difference as that’s ‘unsprung’ weight... so will make the car feel more agile.

How far do you want to go?

I'm around 11% according to a tool I just used online. Probably cobblers and doesn't mean much to me to be honest. I was just happy to shed the weight of my pack over 3 years simply from a life style change.

A good friend of mine on the other hand races in a serious sprint car. He lost 3 stone with the specific intention of wining the race series he takes part in. So there is a serious point to the post.

Seats, battery, alloys, brakes and roof can lose you mass at a rate of £25-£75/kg.

It’s quite hard to remove sprung weight from the front unless you want to “delete” things. If you have fat ankles, maybe start wearing compression socks. :D

Thin the brakes to just above the min thickness

No that is what I did to my Westfield

Loads of things you would do to a track/race car but not worth the effort/expense for a road car.

^ thats extreme weight reduction!

though fair play, i appreciate that when it comes to unsprung weight on an already very light car, every gram counts!

Im not really looking to turn into a track car as such..

I am hoping to go to the ring this year, was originally going to take the 911 but don’t want to risk spanking that in! And the Z is a very capable car in my opinion and I’ve owned alot of fast capable cars so credit to the Z!

It’s my daily driver so thinking more along the lines of turning the Z4 into a fast road/occasional track car, like a Z4 CS / CSL type, and making it lighter where I can, without going too extreme, the back box delete must have saved a few kgs already

I’m quite interested in getting a Lithium battery, now that there are products like this on the market:

https://www.antigravitybatteries-uk.co.uk/extreme-power-series/antigravity-atx20-hd-battery.html

2.5kgs including mounts, with a fair bit of evidence to support its suitability for weekend/occasional use and not just track work. Earlier versions have had issues, particularly with battery management and systems that provide backup capacity for emergency restarts, but this looks like a relatively sensible way to waste £500.
