Best way to get heating grilles out without damaging them?

I'm about to do the mp3 player socket mod, but I'm worried about damaging the heating vents above the head unit. How can you safely remove these? Do you need to use a hook of some sort??

Use the screwdriver and a credit card at the side of the grill to get them out. No damage.
 
There's a few guides if you search - they worked for me - but I found mine difficult to remove even with them. I popped the two clips/tab inside the top of the vents with thin screwdrivers, and managed to get my fingernails under the edge of one side to pull it forward enough to keep the clip/tab disengaged. I then worked the same on the other side but it wasn't easy!

I carefully pulled on the adjusting tabs too, but I was worried about damanging them as well.
 
I did mine a while ago and this is one of those things where the first time you do it it is a right PITA.

the second time you can you do it in seconds.

I actually found that you dont need to remove the vents or head unit.

if you pop the angled panel below the heater controls where a lot of people stick the jack you can squeeze your hand up behind the head unit. and pop the plug in that way.

the socket is on the lower left of the head as you look on it from the front.

this relies on two things:

!) you have small girly hands like me
2) you are just plugging it in and not having to merge two plugs. cant remember why you'd need to but i know some have had to.
 
Really wasn't easy - took me 20 minutes or so to carefully do it without mucking the dash up.

Good news is though that I managed to get the cable in and it works! Sounds great too. Very cool that the headunit automatically adds in the extra "AUX" input.
 
yes, never rush a car job. Quick scratch easily made, forever to look at.
