Hi guys

Looking to pick your brains , best value family car for around 5k.

Our friends have just had a new baby boy and needing to replace there car , budgets around 5k tops really needs to have plenty of space and good mpg.

Best I have come up with is VW Passat tdi estate, you can get a 06 with around 80-100k 08's 100k plus.

The BMW and Audis seems a bit more and out of budget for a decent one maybe?

Any suggestions and experiences welcome

Thanks

Paza

Its a bit on the dull side but then so is a passat estate 8)

Good shout , I suggested one just not sure on the space factor ... :? I reckon there need to view one :)

Volvo V70
one of the various people carry type cars from Renault, Citroen, Vauxhall or KIA
Mondeo estate
one of the VAG types Seat, VW etc
Mazda 6
Avensis or Corolla verso

loads to pick from... all much or a muchness (IMO)

the 6 or avensis estates are maybe something a bit rarer.

If it was a search for a friend or family member of my own 1 criteria would be , , , , avoid anything french 8)
They may be functional but they will get you in the end  AVOID !

Do they do lots of miles ? Pointless paying over the odds for a diesel if they only do 8k miles a year
I'd look at a Mazda 6...but not bother with the estate as it'd cost more (Do they need an estate?) The amount of rubbish you cart about when you have a small kid is directly linked to whether you have a huge car or a normal sized one. Why bother with something big if a Focus sized car will do ? For the odd occasion they need loads of space for hols etc...roof box fixes the problem.
(We run a Yaris diesel and get 60mpg minimum (22k miles a year) The 4 of us went to Germany for the best part of 3 weeks. Took 4 bikes plus a tandem and clothes for 3 ladies and I and managed.)

Diesel... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/mazda/mazda6/mazda-6-2-0d-sport-143-5dr/1559220

Vectra C 1.9 cdti estate ........mpg 50 + easy servicing and probably have 2K to spare out of the 5K. SRi spec.

I bought this at about 17K now has 120K..... minimal intervention. Eats miles.

I have volvo v50 se. Fantastic spec and very comfortable, used for mountain biking, have also taken 3 people and bikes to the alps, so it's versatile.

Look to the fleet sector for the best bargains. Avoid French stuff. Plenty of Vectra's now really cheap, 5 door or estate, Avensis 5 door or estate,Mondeo 5 door or estate. All 3 of these are good cars and are pretty bombproof. A million sales reps can't be wrong!!! They are built to take the punishment and generally do. German stuff can be nice, but isn't as reliable as they'd like everyone to think they are. Paza3, how's your Lotus?, I'm loving my 996 C4S :D
Marcus.
