best rpm for fastest start?

As long as it doesn't snow yet again will be off to Santa Pod tomorrow.

Any suggestions for the best rpm for optimal launch/wheel spin balance? Will try a few out tomorow but would be interested in any suggestions

Hey Eurohooner - I guess this depends on how much you care for your drivetrain and tyres....

If it were me I'd find a piece of clear tarmac and have a few drags up to the 2nd gear change. My plan for the day would be to simply get it off the line smoothly, forget all the 5k RPM and dumping the clutch and then lay the power down in 2nd

Good luck and i hope you can see the tarmac under the snow :)

the stig reckons you hold it at around 4k revs and take off from that IIRC from a topgear i saw.

like CJ said, best to try as it will probably vary depending on the car, tyres etc etc

I've raced competitively for over 10 years and I've found 4k in the dry works best for me, but in wet conditions I usually drop this to 3k and try to let the torque carry me forward grabbing second a little earlier too ... It will vary a little car to car and definitely differ according to track conditions, but this is probably a good starting point to experiment with. :D

It's a while since I went but I seem to remember getting the best results using about 3k rpm, but I think the track was pretty slick that day.

Well, it will have to wait till next time as it snowed again last night and I couldn't get the car off the drive

I believe the only BMW he's reviewed is the E30 325i Touring. http://www.sniffpetrol.com/2009/12/21/troy-tests-7/

Well it depends on the indivdual car dude... Where it's torque/bhp comes in..rev range...The grip it has off the line ? ?( 911's are very good )

Z4M? I'd say 3-4k depends on tarmac condtions... maybe higher.. whats max torque on one 4900rpm i think ? But then you'd have to slip the clutch a bit that high revs... 3.0 Se.. probably be lower in the rev range? max 3k? as it's alot beefier lower down and simple has less rev range to play with.

He means the Z4M.. also obviously DSC off.. otherwise slipping the clutch is a poor but surprisingly effective way to get off the line as the traction doesn't kick in as much.

You get on the torque at 3000rpm, so anywhere around there should be ample.

Just run the revs up into 3000rpm as the clutch is coming up, let that come in over about a second over the 3000rpm passing and then go full throttle to the limiter, then change.

Taddaaa.

CDV must help prevent a great deal of possible transmission shock here.

Do a short (less than 5 second) burnout on the water box to heat the tyres. Launch at about 3000 RPM with stock tyres and DSC off, progressively higher RPM for stickier or wider tyres. I found anything more on the Contis would just cause excessive wheelspin, even on the VHT surface.

3 best times on the day:
13.7069 seconds, 103.35mph
13.8600 seconds, 103.37mph
13.8608 seconds, 102.00mph
Found getting off the line frustratingly difficult. In the end went for about 2500rpm, gentle throttle and short shift to second.
Tried a 3500rpm start and the car didn't move until in second gear and even then sat spinning for a little longer.
