Best place to sell “normal” cars at present

Like it says above, where’s the best place to sell used cars these days. I am going to sell my daughters Fiat 500 for her soon, generally my first thought has always been Auto Trader, but it doesn’t seem to represent good value these days, especially right now when you can’t really be sure if buying interest is out there, particularly for a car that will probably be around the £3.5k mark.

Will try ads in the local paper etc What else is worth a punt (Gumtree?) are there other selling sites that us old farts may not be familiar with that may work for a car such as a 500 which is often a first car, so appealing to that younger audience, although those cars are probably being bought by other old farts

While I’m here..... two questions for the price of one!

I am also about to sell my 2005, E85 20i, 102k. From experience do those kind of entry level cars sell well on the forum, or given the nature of the beast is the captive audience here generally looking to move onwards and upward to higher spec and newer cars?

All thoughts welcome as usual.

I've had success with gumtree and in particular, Facebook Marketplace. You'll find your key demographic for a 500 at that price point are most likely young, female Facebook users

Pistonheads has been great for me, for both my first Z4 that sold in a few hours, and the children's first car (VW Polo). I could have sold both over and over again (until I marked the cars as sold after which the number disappears they call on ).

The same as the best place to buy anything second hand these days, eBay!

though you'll be in good company... currently over 2000 fiat 500s on there advertised for sale! and currently 230 BMW Z4s.

i just sold a z4 on there, i think a classified ad is about £10-15, and can run for a month. Or do a normal auction, and do a final price fee, but the maximum time for an auction is 10 days.

Part ex at the dealers as my daughter has just purchased a second hand car and they paid well over the market value for hers to do the deal and get the trade moving again.

I haven't bothered with local papers for years as where I live they don't get delivered any more, I have to pick one up at Tesco if I want one so circulation is very limited!

I sold a cheap car (under £1,000) on Gumtree pretty easily in 2014, but both of my previous Z4s on here - although I did get one viewing for my last one via Gumtree.

But for my last 3 Series I just used Auto Trader and paid for the "until it's sold" option as it can often work out cheaper in the end!

Just a thought, but I would have thought there ought to be a forum dedicated to Fiat 500s - definitely worth a search anyway.

Anyway you could always PM me with some details as my sister seems quite keen on having one to replace her Mini.

Apparently it's dead easy according to one of our newest members.

Just say 'anyone want my car?', it's £11000.

Folk will be clamouring for it!

Worth a try..

For sale 2005 Z4 20i E85 102k miles Silver £11,000. Can’t be arsed to post pictures it’s silver, you are all forum members so you know what they look like. :D

Right who wants it

I can’t imagine hardly anybody buying from a classified newspaper ad these days. I would say Pistonheads (free) and Ebay to start. Autotrader to follow if necessary.

DO NOT list it as an auction on Ebay though, put it on as a classified.

Pistonheads is great for modified, collectibles, classics etc. However, I highly doubt the average Joe looking for a Fiat 500 would even have a clue of what Pistonheads is.

Also I seem to find that cars on Pistonheads are way overpriced, but that’s another observation altogether.

Agreed on the classified as opposed to auction point on eBay also.

I'd always go free first then other "paid" adverts. So gumtree, facebook market place and forums (pistonheads, etc).
Then move onto ebay, list as a classified which is £20 for 28 days. Then maybe auto trader depending on car value... i.e. if it's sub 5k? I probably wouldn't bother with autotrader.
