Best mobile contract for WW travel?

So I've had enough of the piece of crap phone I am being forced to use for work and am taking the only option available to me which is hand back my company phone and go private, which I can expense. The only thing I have to do is be sensible on the contract as I travel extensively including outside of Europe and ultimately the phone bill will come off my expenses budget which is fixed each quarter.

Are any of you UK based folk that travel a lot running our own phones, and if so what type of contract do you have?

I know Vodafone will do a fixed fee to take your phone abroad, but coverage at home is poor. I was thinking about EE or O2 as they have better coverage at home.

I've got a few weeks to mull this over as I'm waiting for the 5S to come available. Not interested in the whole one phone over another argument, that belongs in the "done to death" thread, just contracts and experiences.

I have the EE contract which includes 60 minutes world wide calls (from / to).

I took the limited option of 2000 minutes, 250 texts and unlimited data for £8.50 a month (my own iPhone, not subsidised). Prior to that, same deal with phone included was £30.

When abroad, the bolt on package you can add is £5 for additional time, which is reasonable and enough for what I use. Generally don't use the phone a lot abroad and do everything on the wifi via skype iMessage, whatsapp, viber etc.

What about putting your work sim into the iPhone, which means you'd have to get hold of one SIM free but might work out cheaper in the long term.

+1 I do this as my company is crapberry, and having man sized fingers, the keyboards are crap for me. I have told work and have the work SIM in my 4S, they just pay for additional Internet, and we're both happy.

I've had the work Sim in my personal phone before, but Vodafone has poor coverage at home and I'm trying to work from my home office more often so looking to fix both issues.

I am in the same boat... Travel a lot with work and forced to use vodaphone.

I looked into orange a few years ago.. But then realised its a £50 contract... Money i'd rather save!

Have you looked into Vodafone Sure Signal for at home? It acts as a local 3G mast and routes calls, texts etc. from/to the Voda network via your broadband

Buy a Vodafone sure signal box, will boost your signal. My old house had minimum bars or none at all, with the sure signal I always had full signal

I'm not sure about those micro cells, or what they transmit over your broadband/how much traffic they generate. Bizarrely while work will allow me to expense a private contract on another operator, I can't expense one of those.

Ask your work IT Dept (or whoever runs your mobile phone contracts) to supply you with one to try out - They're a one-off purchase so there's no on-going costs and when we used Vodafone for our mobile contacts we had a couple of directors/senior mgmt who lived in dead areas and were given them free

They generate tiny amounts of traffic in normal use - with a single phone you shouldn't notice the hit on your broadband
