Best dual VANOS removal & rebuild guide?

I got the complete X8R kit with gaskets, seals and anti rattle bearings.

I have found at least 3 sets of instructions on the Net for how to do the job, none specifically for the E85. Just wondering if you all might have a suggestion and link to what you consider the best set of instructions.

I’ve found instructions at dr-VANOS (probably the least detailed), beisansystems (probably the most detailed) and VANOS-bmw (somewhere in the middle). I’m sure there are others. I also watched one video.

Any suggestions on other sites/links?

Any parts that should be replaced, while I’m there?

Does the electric fan really have to come out. Since we Z4 owners have to flex the support and the fan is behind it, I don’t see why you would need to.

I used the x8r video and instructions- the m54 is on the bench in it but it does a better job of helping see what may be hidden while on a car

100% take the electric fan out, plus the air box as getting your hands into the area is essential.

Also helped get maximum leverage for the few millimetres needed to flex the cross member and push the block

Where you based I’d happily help out if you are nearby?

Well when I picked up the Z4, Feb of this year, I searched for “Z4 forums “ and I think this was the first one I found. I am very happy here. I do check out some other BMW forums but this is my favorite and my first place to look. Sometimes I don’t fully understand the language but I figure it out eventually.

As you all say, cheers!
