(this is on a m3 but its probably easlily refittable for the z4)

Brembo obviously know there stuff but to operate at their best I would imagine the pistons in the caliper should be in the centres of the pads.
They look like they would press more on the outside edge of the disk.

They maybe don't have a caliper big enough.
Mostly when you get bigger discs, the centre gets bigger. Here they extend the pad a bit. (what I mean is that you get the same calipers with a 340mm BBK and a 380mm BBK; but they keep the disk run area width the same, so the centre gets bigger)

The effect is the same, except the lower part of the pad still gives some extra force/brake area.
It is not going to wear faster, or stop worse. (it is still able to dissipate heat better and have more clamping area) (compared to a smaller pad)
Bit it indeed looks odd. Mainly because its so asymetrical. With normal brakes the piston area also doesnt extend all the way to the sides. (the pad area is also bigger than the piston area). But that is out of sight and it hangs over both sides.
Maybe this is a pre production picture and they will make a bigger caliper especially for this set. From what I understand is that this set will be available through bmw (so people can finance it with their car ;)) but it's not quite ready and available.
I know that some Bentleys also have ridiculously large carbon brakes (obviously ridiculously priced too), and they have a bespoke caliper too.

Brembo+KW is indeed nice :oops:

I think you're right with D2 & K-Sport at the lower end, but AIUI StopTech are in a different league, along with the likes of AP and Alcon
 
Stoptech is a different company with different tech.

D2 & ksport share their components.

Everybody has to decide for themselves what is better.
